I think you did something with a story line in your fisherman rescue piece. The effort to create the same kind of wonder with standard shooting is way beyond you.

  • Joey Carr 1 year ago
It's so funny that model makers spend all that effort on making models look real, then CGI replaces them and all-of-a-sudden it's cool to make reality look like a model :)

Very cool. Must have taken FOREVER to render all that lens blur!
  • gonzalo chong 1 year ago
I think the images are actually taken from real world with only a tilt-shift lens and a 35mm adapter. There´s no CGI in this clip. (sorry for my crapy english!::)

  • D'y'know, I think I'd be able to reproduce this using a D90 and a Lensbaby, or even my D200 intervalometer and Lensbaby. :/ Looks wickedly awesome, though! I love tilt-shift miniatures!

I have seen this type of effect before and I love it! Is this done with only a tilt-shift lens and a 35mm adapter? What lens and what video camera did you use, it looks fantastic!
  •
  • Wynner3 1 year ago
That was so cool, nice blur effect.
  •
  • I like it alot!
It reminded me of a maquette, I guess what made me feel that feeling, is the fact that is quite blurred at both background and foreground, very like when you use a macro lensess on a camera to shoot small things like an Antz...:D...

    VERY INTERESTING Keith!!

    Thanks for share!!

    Hi Jay,

These are high res photos downsized to produce the video. The smooth motion is related to frame rate. Thanks for the questions.

Fantastic stuff, of course, and I hope to see more. Where do you shoot these from to get such high angles? Are you on nearby buildings zooming in?
  • Keith Loutit plus 1 year ago
    Hi Nick,

Sydney has a great landscape for this kind of photography. Plenty of hills and clifflines surrounding beautiful harbors. Cheers, Keith.

  • mbgriffi plus 1 year ago
Very nice! Tilt shift heaven. Did you shoot in timelapse or in realtime and then timelapsify it? Additionally what do you use to edit with?
  • Keith Loutit plus 1 year ago
Hi mbgriffi - Yes timelapse and archive high quality stills. I edit using FC Pro, Color and occasionally motion. Thanks for asking. Keith.

    very fun! very interesting..

    This is amazing movie...

What type of camera taken movie?
  •
  • David Gidali 1 year ago
Are you sure no post DOF on those shots? I could swear the blur is based on 2D screen space and not real world distance from camera.
(Looking at those high poles "loosing focus" as they enter the blurred area in the background).
  • Keith Loutit plus 1 year ago
Hi David, Lenses only. I have converted MF lenses to tilt & mounted them on a DSLR. The reason the poles are also out of focus is that the plane of focus created by the tilt shift lens has been flattened to cut through the scene. At closer subject distances you could control this better.
  • David Gidali 1 year ago
I see, thanks for the info. It sure looks awesome - I could definitely find use to it in some of my future film projects :)

    Very, very clever, and beautiful.

I am interested in the psychology. As far as I can see, there's no real reason for me to "feel" as if these are miniatures (they are not of course), but I do. Strongly.

Is this simply because previous conditioning has lead me to associate a very short depth of field and no water or wind movement with models? Or is it something else?
  • Keith Loutit plus 1 year ago
Hi Chris - Yes that a big part of it. I go into a bit of detail in this interview:

    submarinechannel.com/articles/item/188

    Cheers,

    Keith.
