why are you patenting this, don't we have enough IP troubles? Or you want to be the only one selling touch capable mirrors? Mind you that this is not a new idea, and in no way yours, I saw this before

my IP rests entirely on code that is key to future projects, an element that ties all my work together. I'm glad to see MANY people working on new methods of interactivity, good for everyone. futuristic input methods will get here quicker that way.

Yeah, but imagine all those sticky fingers on glass. It would be a bugger to clean.

I agree about the IP issue. Seems unlikely to gain one given that multitouch is everywhere and interactive mirrors are too: magicmirror.thebigspace.com/video/

That's an awesome use of a mirror. looks like they had difficulties shooting video of it like I did :) and btw, as mentioned above, my IP rests entirely on code that is key to future projects, an element that ties all my work together.

and this defuses the issue why? software patents are such a good idea, after all... anybody wanna patent my Download Bar? Or my One Click Shopping? it is key to future projects, after all...

I'm not sure I understand in which direction you are asking me this. Are you saying that patents are or aren't a good idea? I was saying that they sometimes aren't. It depends on how generic things are.

Looks like software patents may have gone out the window completely, recently in the news. I believe some protection of intellectual property is necessary. trade secrets enable markets. I'm a firm believer in an open source effort as well, community based alternatives... it's common to see a combination of both - companies that both share some assets while projecting core elements. Like the Reactable touch interface. they don't give away the code for their whole table (they'd have no business), but they do give away the ability to do tracking if you'd like to build your own software using the framework. I belive that enables grassroots progress and business to happen simultaneously.

I wouldn't mind being in some sort of er... "test group" or something. You know, if you want to get a few in the hands of the people. Ahem.

Translation: Need. One. Now! :) This is way cool.

Hi Alpay, that's a great display. Are you using a IR camera behind the mirror to detect user interactions? I can't tell how thick the mirror is from the video.

Also, what platform did you base the software on? Windows? OSX? Linux?
  • Alpay Kasal 1 year ago
It's IRP (IR plane) on that one but yes, I've got it working with an ir camera now. also, that prototype was kind of thick, i got it down to about 1 foot deep with a better projection gear. You're mostly seeing all Flash running the mirror, so it's very easy to code for.
