240 still photos joined together in two different ways to produce timelapses of the rotation of the night sky around the pole over a 7 hour period.

Shot at the Stockport Observatory, to the North of Adelaide, SA, home to the Astronomical Society of South Australia.

I've gotta say - I'm well pleased with this one! :oD

The Nebulae I think you're referring to are the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds - local galaxies.

I tried this with my Nikon D50, but I can't find the proper software to "compile" the shots (the second part of your video) and I'm on a mac - any tips would be appreciated
  • Martin Whipp 1 year ago
Not too sure Jake. I used a package called K3 CCD Tools to compile mine. It's an astro program.

Perhaps something in Photoshop would let you do it?

    Hey Martin!
I just tested this out in my backyard (Got lucky with a pretty starry night)
    vimeo.com/1963880

It didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped. But thanks for the help, and awesome video

You can also get star trails by making long exposures. That might help you Jake. Use whatever the maximum time your camera will let you. Usually 30 seconds on a DSLR.

Can you explain the "image stacking" ??
  • Martin Whipp 10 months ago
    Hi GB,

Your best bet is to go on to Tom's web forum at Timescapes.org

I put a post on there shortly after I created this and explained it all there - too much to fit in here.

Very nice! wondering how the stacking works. I have a few moonset timelapse shots I'd like to test it out with. I'm using AE CS3.

We're impressed. Would you be interested in doing some commissioned work for us in immersive time-lapse?

Awesome! I love my 8 inch SCT - just wish I got to use it more but NYC hardly ever has the best seeing and it's usually in January when it's well below freezing...uggh!
