Not as easy a question to answer as, "Where have all the cookies gone?"

I think FuzzyDave can answer that one. :-)
  • FuzzyDave plus 2 years ago
    I ate all dah Cookies.
    And the Black Peoples.
    Was that wrong?

Silly Question: Why is Jake responsible for bringing in more racially diverse members? I'm making a huge assumption here, but I'm thinkin' you know more black people than Jake does. Why not invite them yourself?

    Just sayin.
  • Pam Newman 2 years ago
I actually am trying to talk my friends into using vimeo.

I just thought it'd be funny to call him out, lol.

OOooo. You're Sassy! And Sneaky. I knew there was a reason I liked you.

As far as your friends are concerned -- Be forewarned: I'ma gonna eat em. Especially if they're covered in frosting.

Reggie is our self-appointed chief evangelist; his music videos are just a small part of what he does here.

I have often wondered about this myself. JD is another black person who is active on Vimeo.

    vimeo.com/user:JD

I have seen clips from black people, but most of them don't get involved in the community.

Maybe when we bring out groups and people can interact more with others who share the same interests we'll see a broader spectrum on Vimeo. At the moment, it probably feels like there's just one group: Vimeo diehards.

I made this video a staff pick in the hopes that it will bring in some friends for you.
  • JD 2 years ago
    Ooh, publicity.

I'll do my best to spread the word.

Stereotypes make things faster. Kidding. But I think the web culture is diverse and Vimeo will attract everyone eventually.
  • Pam Newman 2 years ago
I agree. Eventually this site will grow enormously in popularity. It's all about getting the word out there.
  • Jake Lodwick 2 years ago
I like to think so. I keep thinking of Vimeo's destiny as being like cell phones, where all types of people use it, and you don't really notice the technology, you notice the people.

I witness a lot of, let's not call it social tension, but social guardedness between the various races in NYC. I hope to use Vimeo to "get close" to people I couldn't normally get close to, and hopefully erase all the images of those people that I've taken in over the years, not through real life experience but through movies & TV & magazines.
  • ThornMonkey™ 2 years ago
most excellent goals. Like I said in my intro vid, I like your and CV's philosophies about the web and social networking.

i have a black friend named kelly. I drop phat beats and he freestyle raps. He wont let me record our jam sessions though. He is to shy. Maybe black people are to shy for vimeo. or maybe vimeo is to shy for black people

now that may or may not make any sense - i will let it simmer though.
  • Pam Newman 2 years ago
I am extremely interested in these "Phat beats."

Perhaps vimeo is too shy for black people. It should attend some self-development classes. :-D

  • djotaku 2 years ago
    maybe they're all on youtube?
  •
  • djotaku 2 years ago
Not sure how seriously to take this, but I think your methods are a little flawed. You search "black people" and "african americans", but I don't see any anglos tagging their videos with "white people" and I don't tag my videos with "Cuban people"
  • Pam Newman 2 years ago
... well considering that I called out the white guy that runs the place and asked him to find me, "Black Friends," I think my search methods were meant to inspire a little dark comedy, much less than show a realistic summarzation of how many black people use this service.

But yeah, you're totally right. I don't tag my clips with, "Crazy black lady."
  • djotaku 2 years ago
I figured, but it just seemed a bit strange. Keep up your sense of humor and I'm sure more and more people will turn up. Vimeo's fighting the hold of youtube.

This is stupid. Who cares about skin color... Whether there was all black people or all white people on here does it really matter? We're people!!
  • Gus plus 2 years ago
It's so simple it just might work!

Frankly, before you said anything, Pam, I never gave a thought to it, and not for any reason in particular (the guy who I share half my projects with is black).

I don't know... the front page, to me, isn't racially biased in any way, so how can you blame people for not joining?

Sometimes there's a bit too much CV happenings (and yes, there are plenty of white people there) but otherwise, it doesn't make too much sense.
  • Pam Newman 2 years ago
I'm not saying the front page is biased in any way. I'm just saying there aren't many black members.

Hmmm, edited for self-destructive content, lol.
  • Gus plus 2 years ago
Mm... then what do you attribute the absense of black people to? And who would be to blame?
  • Jake Lodwick 2 years ago
    I wouldn't "blame" anybody...
  • Pam Newman 2 years ago
    Extremely good response.
  • Gus plus 2 years ago
Looked like there was blame being thrown around...

I don't think I pulled that one out of thin air...

You did tag the video with 'called out board'...

To continue pondering any shortage on Vimeo, let's also talk about the general lack of a LOT of demographics! Haha, seriously, if I get greeted on the frontpage one more time by the same stale videos...

Oh, also, I think it has to do with Vimeo's main competition--Youtube--sucking away all the users. That, and the 250mb upload per week limitation!! Digital quality of video may reign supreme for those of here, but at the end of the day, even I resort to YouTube to send videos to family. Maybe black users are more space savvy? And Vimeo just can't handle that? :)
  • Pam Newman 2 years ago
    :-)

Absolutely. The space thing makes me not post as many videos as I'd like, because I want to conserve it for later in the week.

Twas there no limit, I'd post like a maniac, lol.
  • anendel 2 years ago
True, but i did learn that this space limitation makes me aim for quality. Contrary to youtube where you will be more easily tempted to upload crappy videos.
Quality is king! Vimeo is great.
Anyway, if we do are complaining: maybe i should create a movie stating that Vimeo is selective in favor of showing American video clips on the front page.. And that my clips are hardly ever watched.
But hey, i can live with that!
    For now.

  • Cecily Walker 2 years ago
I should think that my photo at the left should say it all, but the main issue I have is that you begin talking about people from Scotland, South America, and Canada as if there are no Black people in these countries.

Hi, I'm Cecily. I live in Vancouver, Canada. Nice to meet you.
  • Pam Newman 2 years ago
Hi Cecily! I'm Pam. I live in Louisville Kentucky and I've lived in the United States all my life.

I've been to Canada several times-- Montreal and Toronto. Montreal is my favorite (croissants at McDonalds? Liquor at almost every coffee shop!?! I need to move again!) I hear Vancouver is nice.

The main point that I was trying to make with this video is there's obviously a low representation of Black Americans on this website.

What I was trying to say with the segment you're referring to is that there are active users from all over the earth, but perhaps
  • Cecily Walker 2 years ago
There are active users from all over the earth, but the point I'm trying to make is that Black doesn't equal "African American". Some of "us" aren't American, so by your own criteria, you're excluding quite a lot of users. That's fine - it's your search after all - but it might explain why you didn't turn up very much.

(confession time, I'm American by birth, but I also have Canadian citizenship).

I'd also wonder how many videos there are by black content creators who don't necessarily include themselves in their videos. I'd consider myself in that category, even though I've only managed to post two videos.
  •
  • anendel 2 years ago
Hey, i did notice your clip on the front page. Isn't that cool? And like said before, there are not only American African (or is it African American) people on this website or others. Also, searching for "black people" doesn't really represent the amount of videos that includes black people. It's not because there are white people in my clips, i'm going to explicitly write that in the tags. Or vice versa.
  • Pam Newman 2 years ago
    That was a joke.
  •
  • Pam Newman 2 years ago

  •
  • Zibby 2 years ago
pam: i'm really glad you made this video. i was wondering the same thing, but didn't really think it was my place to start that dialogue. thank you for doing so--look at all this response! i adore vimeo, but working with expensive technology becomes an inherently classist problem--which in america is often a shared issue with people of color.
to everyone naming particular people in third person as representative "black vimeo users": only in such a minority population would that be possible. i mean, if someone asked where all the white people were, i doubt anyone would begin a list--what would the point be? i understand the desire to stand behind something so great as vimeo, and it makes me happy to see so many people joining in this discussion--vimeo is a community space, which has definitely been exemplified in this thread. and like any community, identifying these problems is crucial to strengthening it. it's easy to get defensive about things we love, and also to tokenize in an effort to defend, but maybe we as a community should think of how to open up this already diverse forum to the people who are absent, or at least consider these divides that aren't always so clear until someone brings them up.

this made me wonder so i googled:
42,1% of vimeo users are us americans, the rest are ~europe&canada&aus (alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?url=vimeo.com please, no alexa comments)
12,3% us americans are black (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racial_demographics_of_the_United_States)
    internet penetration = 74%white&hispanics 61% black (pewinternet.org/trends/User_Demo_4.26.06.htm)
    -> ~11% us american internet-pop are black
for europe i cant find ANY racial demographics (prop cause no one really bothered cause the situation is extremly diff from country to country) so i'll just estimate 4% internet pop are black.
so that makes 11% of 42,1% and 4% of 57,9%
about 7% here on vimeo should be black!
if not there is prob some racial discrimiation going on or my calculations were wrong (impooossible!)
  •
  • hªnnes 2 years ago
and by the way, appearently only 1.6% vimeo-users are italian. so you're not even close to beeing the loneliest demographic on vimeo :)
that said, i'd like to join the friend request:
i want to meet some italians, preferably black!

isn't the whole point of having an online identity that it nullifies (or at least softens) one's physical presence? your online personality transcends color, race, class, etc. because it is a fictional environment that literally has no consequences in the real world, i.e. lives and dies while sitting in front of a computer. (i.e. When I stand up in fifteen seconds, this me will cease to exist. )
