It's full fall color here in the North Eastern US. This year has been one of the best for fall foliage. My mentor who taught me so much about TV production back in the early 90's passed away recently. I hadn't seen him in a few years but still think of his lessons nearly everyday. Many of these locations we shot together nearly 20 years ago. I will always remember him and I offer this video up as my way of saying thanks to an old friend. If playback stutters, click the HD IS ON to HD IS OFF.

Technically speaking, this was shot with an EX1 in 1080 30p. Some shots use the Letus Extreme, some do not. A few also use the indislider, but mostly it's just the stock lens. Cut in FCP and lightly color graded in FCP as well.

stirring work, in all respects...the single falling leaf is the type of shot that only comes along once in a great while, and you captured it wonderfully!

Pauly, you did again.... only better. I love the disolves on top of close ups - lots of textures...it feels like one continueous canvas, the leaf "follow shot", and most especially your tribute to your mentor Jack. You are a gem, bro. Hope to make a video in your honor someday...but no time soon. ;) - pH

Beautiful work, and incredible variety of shots. I Loved how you left it with the leaf sailing away...
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
Thanks Michael. Everyone can take their own meaning from it. But to me the falling leaves from the two shots before represent the heaviness one can experience from a loss of a loved one, even falling tears if you will, but then the solo leaf represents the spirit of Jack, ever sailing on! I shot it going all the way to the ground, but decided it should never land and be forever flying in the breeze. Not sure if thats conveyed but I always like to have some meaning, even if it only makes sense to me.

Paul this is awesome mate!!!!......1st class shots.....much respect!!!, how did you get the shot of the lake so low???
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
Pretty simple actually, placed it on the edge of the lake, since I was using my 35 mm adaptor on rails, the front is lower then the back, putting the camera at quite an angle. Because the adaptor has such great depth of field, it looks like your looking further away then you really are.

i thought your exposures looked pitch perfect. I was wondering if you use an external monitor to achieve that. Also, I was curious how many hours of filming this video represents. great locations!
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
I just use the monitor on the EX1. I'd say I have about 4 or 5 hours of raw footage from this fall to make this. I have MANY, MANY more nice shots, just couldn't fit them into this one 3 minute song.

Beautiful Paul. Very steady and crystal clear. I have been SLR photographer since 1972 and never really migrated to video. My interests in coming to this site have been a direct result of the new Canon 5D Mk II which has HD video capability.

I am very curious as to how you created the sideways panning motion. Did you have the camera on a horizontal rail? Beautiful stuff and a nice dedication to your mentor who died a young man.
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
It's called an IndiSlider. See my video of it here:
    vimeo.com/1493399
Theres also another one you'll find in that description that is entirely shot with it. Called GROW!

    Thanks for the kind words!

  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
I used MPEG Streamclip for this one. Set it for H.264 and 1280x720. Takes a l-o-n-g time though.
