Lutheran Hospital's first kidney transplant
2 years ago
Rev. Robert Martz, 47, of Topeka (Ind.) Mennonite Church, donated a kidney to Colleen Smith, 47, on June 14, 2007.
It was the first kidney transplant by Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind., which received accreditation and certification in May 2007 to perform the procedure.
Smith, a Fairfield Elementary School teacher, had been on the waiting list 5 1/2 years.

71,000 people are on waiting list for kidneys in the US.. 690 are in Indiana.. 11,000 kidneys come from cadavers every year, which leaves us a whole lot short on kidneys... We need more live donors! We need more hero's in this world!! My thanks and love to all of those at Lutheran hospital who were involved in the transplant.. Can't help but tear up when you see the kidney working!! I know that through God, Colleen will do great things with her life! God bless you all, You are all hero's!
