Sadly, when ever I've been to Portland in the past I always saw a bunch of drunk idiots and/or a fight. The first time I was in Portland I saw a homeless guy get beaten to a pulp at Burnside for trying to steal a kids skateboard.

A Car? Portland has the best transportation system in the Northwest, possibly on the Northwest. I don't know how BART is or whatever they have in LA, but with a car you'd have to deal with parking, someone breaking into your car (maybe) (probably not) having to drive home DRUNK and thus killing yourself - oh and you have to buy gas.

"rent a car for your weekend travel needs" in order to avoid stuff like the Freaky Friday craziness. So only for the nights when the suburanites come in to experience the city, only the experience isn't the same, 'cause they are there messing it up. It's hard for a mom to see "danger" all around the kids : ) I've been out there and the public transportation did seem fine. I've been in other cities and not so fine. I concur with the driving home drunk part! Don't do that.

Seriously WAY too much strange activity for one Friday in Portland. I think your city is so cool that some days it just needs to unravel a bit to stay centered and balanced. Even still it's WAY nicer than LA.

I think you managed to capture almost everything that can be weird about riding the MAX at night. The only thing that's missing is a homeless dude in his underwear. It could be worse I suppose.

i LOVE how during the fight, that guy is just standing there talking on his cell. and when they come in his direction, he just takes a step to the side to give them some more room. totally unfazed by any of it. also, never have i experienced a train ride so eventful. i am impressed.

In certain places they give you 5 or 10 cents for returning a can, so poor people / homeless people / college students / weird Chinese ladies / drug addicts collect cans for the money.

I'd like to think that someone went up to that guy that brought the newspaper on the way off the train and just said 'Thanks'. Even if I didn't know they guy in the fluoresescent garb, that's what I would have done. He went out of his way and I appreciate that that. It seemed like he got nothing in return.
