1. iPhone Linux Demonstration Video
A short narrated video demonstrating iPhone Linux, a port of the Linux operating system to the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and first-generation iPod touch platforms. This video was created with Cycorder, a video recorder app for the iPhone, with apologies for the blurriness.

Is there something wrong with iPhone OS?
  • Alex Graham 11 months ago
was thinking the same thing myself
  • ε "epsy" 11 months ago
Well, Apple's OS is quite locked regarding third-party applications, for example.

its nice to cater for the >5% that will be interested in this, but personally I would go for a smartphone that has a really bad operating system like the Nokia N95 and port a version of Linux for it. Improving a great phone/OS is difficult, improving on one as bad as the N95 would be easy and of far more use to there frustrated users.

I agree open source and having choices can only be good, but there are so many devices running awful operating systems that could be improved, the iPhone is the last place I would start

Awesome! That's all I can add.
    You guys just rock.

@Lars van Susteren: Yes, as a matter of fact there are some things. I'll just list Bluetooth as number one.
And it's also a great deal of fun booting a second OS on iPhone.

Although this is cool news. It is very annoying to hear you making the smack sound by sucking on your teeth every 30 seconds.

This is stunning. Since learning that the iPhone/iPod Touch run a modified version of BSD (like Mac OSX) I have been waiting for some sort of open source port of Linux. When Ubuntu announced their plans to port their OS to the ARM architecture I had visions of Ubuntu MID Edition on my iPod Touch. Not a week or two later and this shows up. I can't wait to see what happens. Now, off to play with the new bootloader!

cool, but I have a question. Why would you buy a Mac Pro to run Linux on it? The whole point of an iPhone is the OSX (mobile). If I wanted to hack something, I would just buy a N95 or something with better hardware.
  • planetbeing 11 months ago
I bought one because I really liked the interface and the integration. I worked on iPhone Linux because I love to tinker, and it's nice to be able to change every piece of software running on the bare metal of the phone. I hack devices I love; I don't buy devices to hack.

Besides that, I think iPhone Linux has a future as an operating system that you can use alongside the existing iPhone OS. Like a feature or an app on Android, but it doesn't exist on the iPhone? Simply boot up the other OS. I also think this will let iPhone users see what the open source competition is offering, and perhaps choose to purchase it as their next phone.

    Choice is good. Everybody wins.

    Question: why?
  •
  • will lainez 11 months ago
alright!! why u asked!!.. why not is the answer... it is through the tinkering and breaking down of barriers that we progress... closed monopolized software can not by nature be good software.. too few eyes looking at the code.. my two cents!! sorry!.. willl download and tinker on my ipod touch!!

sudo kill -0(GUI) //no this is not enough for a hacker, iPhone OS still has its beauty.
sudo kill -0(OS) // yey ! it worked for me my iPhone is not even a brick.
reboot > select f**king Linux in Console mode.

Hi, you should get FramebufferUI (fbui) running so that you can do some graphics. It requires kernel 2.6.9. Just a thought.

    Thats sweet.

How were you sending the kernel to the iphone via USB? was the keyboard control, done using something simular to the USB Legacy module in BIOS?
