Note: This is about 5 minutes long.

This project took me about 72 hours spread over ~3 weeks. You may want to download the original file to see some of the details a little better.

Thanks to eat a bug for translating some of the first pages from Japanese.

Completely Amazing, love the escalating track and the cat here and there checking it out, and the change of wardrobe over and over.
  • Remyyy 1 year ago
Same here ! Really easy to watch and wow, you're not a lazy guy !!
  • Ben Millett 1 year ago
Thanks guys. It was hard to find the right music, but thought this was the best option. The wardrobe change is just a matter of doing the project on different days - after a couple of days I thought it might have been funny to do it all wearing the same shirt, but it was too late. Besides, I can show off my shirts this way. :)
  • Pirata718 1 year ago
yeah the change of wardrobe made it that much more of an epic. awesome track too! (yay! battle music!) wow, now i want to make stuff! :D

    Thanks Pirata718!

I would never have the patience to do something like that. Many props to you Ben.

Thanks! It helps to have movies playing at the same time. I made it through ~24 movies (including the extended Lord of the Rings (stopping when the fan credits start, though) and the 5 hr Pride & Prejudice)).

    Wow!
    Whats the foil for?
  • Ben Millett 1 year ago
I pour glue onto the foil and use a toothpick to apply the glue to the paper. Pouring the glue on the foil makes it easier to get the right amount of glue.

Wow, that's amazing. I kept wondering how anything more could be added to it, but then there was more! It looks so cool, you must have felt really proud when you finished it. I really like this video too, with the music and seeing the whole process. Good work Ben.
  • Ben Millett 1 year ago
Yeah, after the first couple of days, my wife and friends thought it was almost done, but there's more and more that gets attached. Thanks for the comment!

WOW! that's incredible. there's no way i would/could have the patience for that

At the end I was pretty ready to be done so that I could do other things with my life...
  •
  • ojo 1 year ago
Great job, did you get this from the internet (downloaded) or was it made by yourself?

Now the cat has something to play with ;-)
  • Ben Millett 1 year ago
I downloaded it. The pdf was a scan of a book ( ghibliworld.com/howlscollection.html#8 ) that one could buy a while ago from amazon. With all the details that went into it, I could never have designed it. There is another version that Epson's website had, but it is of the Castle at the end of the movie.
  • Ben Millett 1 year ago
The Epson version can be downloaded here:

    Ben,

Thanks for the links. I went to the Ghibli site, and I see the book, but no download. Am I going to the right place for the PDF file? Thanks!
  • Ben Millett 1 year ago
They don't have a pdf version there. There's a link somewhere - it took me a _long_ time to find it via google. I have the zip file (175 MB). If you want it, message me and we can figure out a way to get it to you.

I'll have to watch the film now.
  • Ben Millett 1 year ago
Yeah. The english dubbing is actually pretty good, although Christian Bale (who does the voice for Howl) sounds like he's still thinking he's the Batman. The original Japanese voices are really good.

WOW!! You did it man, and it looks fantabulous!!! I'm mightily impressed to say the least. I remember seeing this in theaters when it came out in Japan, but I didn't really like it. After seein you make the model though, it makes me want to watch it again. Bravo dude, bravo. How did you film it?

And I love the pulsating cat.
  • Ben Millett 1 year ago
Thanks! I thought the film was better the second or third time I watched it. I used my iSight on my MacBook to record a frame every 300 frames (so about every 10 seconds). Turned out that iMovie doesn't consistently capture every 300th frame (was more like every 450th frame). But even then the final footage was about 9 minutes. Exported the entire thing from iMovie as an image sequence, exporting 15 frames/sec, so that it would be twice as fast. Opened the image sequence in QT Pro, saved as a .mov, then imported into iMovie. Maybe more info than you needed, but that's how.

Mei was definitely wanting to be front and center.

    im very impressed.

i love howl's moving castle, just never thought you could actually make the whole thing from paper. (was there any internal structure or was it all just paper)

Also like the using foil to hold the glue. I thought i was the only one who did that. I used to use the top of a jam jar but after a while i had loads of jam jar tops with dry glue in floating around and it got too much for my wife to bear.

Do you know of any good places to get pdfs of things like this?
  • Ben Millett 1 year ago
Thanks! Yeah, foil takes up a lot less space. The only internal supports were from folding over sections of the top and bottom covers of the main round body.
The first papercrafts I did (dragon & maneki neko) were from canon: cp.c-ij.com/english/3D-papercraft/index.html .

    various Ghibli items: the-joeba.livejournal.com/
    motorcycles: yamaha-motor.co.jp/global/entertainment/papercraft/realistic/index.html
    guitars: paperguitar.com/main/
    gaming: kotaku.com/gaming/papercraft/

omg! r u serious....amazing. where is that castle model from? or did u invent it
  • Ben Millett 1 year ago
I didn't invent it. Studio Ghibli produced it and sold the papercraft as a book. I downloaded a scanned version of the book and printed it out. Thanks for the comment.

Good grief! I just started out on my first papercraft which is the Daruma Doll. I never thought someone was actually able to build the moving castle. Where is the scanned version available? Or do I have to message you for that answer? :)

    Wow. That's amazing. Truly amazing.

I've been trying to find the pdf, but have come to find (as so many others) that it's not available any longer.

    So I have to ask;
do you still have it and could you possibly send it to me? I REALLY, really want to build one for myself.
