this is a short version of a documentary that i have edited on behalf of my wife, who shot the footage for gramicci (where she used to design the men's line of clothing).

it features john raux, a charismatic, uniquely eccentric artist, inventor and designer, who is presently hiking the entire length of the pacific crest trail; starting from campo, california (along the u.s. border with mexico) and concluding sometime in october, 2007 in port manning, british columbia.

one of the things that is unique about john, is that he has constructed almost all of his camping equipment from scratch, or modified and customized it in very amusing and practical ways. these inventions and modifications are the focus of this documentary, offering an insight into his creative process.

he made a camping stove from an aluminium can, a backpack from recycled materials, he constructed his own tent, modified hiking poles, made hiking gaiters from repurposed fabric on a pair of hiking pants from gramicci (who have also offered their support for his trek). he made a work of art out of his hooded sweatshirt and he walks around with a stack of two-dollar bills. watch the film to find out why.

john has a cheerful and thought-provoking outlook on the value of making your own equipment and in this film, he speculates what he might expect to find along his journey.

this is the SHORT version of the documentary - a quick overview of what each segment contains. there is also a longer version.
