67. Waking Up.
That's really me waking up, no acting. It's from the second alarm (I started the video on the first alarm, then fell back asleep and this was 10 minutes later).

Anyway, just wanted to use the footage somehow. This is a little different from the usual stuff.

I used to have to do that... but I'm at a point in life where I wake up on time, on my own. I don't use alarm clocks anymore.

    I HATE alarm clocks.

    This is a great video.
  • Khamis Hammoudeh 1 year ago
I HATE them too! Mine usually goes off at the time I want it, but after using the snooze about one time, it doesn't go off anymore that morning. And then I end up sleeping until like 11. Take today for example, set for 8.. ands I didn't wake up until 11:20.
  • Caroline Martin 1 year ago
Same! That's why I use my macbook iCal and my cell phone alarm.

    Very creative :)

You should take more advantage of the nap. I find that napping dreams are far better than sleeping dreams.
  • Caroline Martin 1 year ago
I never dream when I nap, though.
  • 3d60 1 year ago
Nap dreams are ace, so much more explicit and devious......did I say that out loud.

If I set the alarm, I wake up without exception before it goes off, meaning I have the battle of will, do I stay in bed and wait for it to go off or do I get up......can you guess what wins....In some ways I like it especially if I wake up well early, because I can legitamately go back to sleep again, I love that feeling of allowing ones self the luxury of more sleep.
  • Adam Holwerda 1 year ago
If I'm ever at a point where I NEED a dream - (i.e. dream women) - I take a nap. I always dream, and I always remember it. Vividly. Sometimes I feel like if I don't find someone I might just marry my imagination.

Planning ahead is the only way my alarm can help me wake me up. I have to go to sleep planning to wake up when the alarm goes off. Otherwise, I turn the alarm off without even remembering I shut it down.

I dream when I get more than six hours. Almost always, I have good dreams.
  • Caroline Martin 1 year ago
that's a brilliant idea. I'm going to try that tonight. thanks!

Planning to wake up when the alarm goes off, eh? It's so crazy...it just might work. Why didn't I think of that? :o|

my friend used to do that, leave his alarm clock plugged in at the other side of the room. but then he just got used to letting it alarm him while he laid in bed. eventually he'd just wake up and go back to sleep and let it make its horrible noises for a while.

ps, is that a polaroid panorama back there? I have a crush on polaroid panoramas.
  • Caroline Martin 1 year ago
Yes it is! You'll get a better look when I do my room tour later. :]
  • brandon schaaf 1 year ago
yeah! looking forward to it then!

I have this horrible problem of changing my alarm time in my sleep. I won't remember, but i'll adjust the time back 30 minutes... sometimes I'll do that more than once. But I'll never remember doing it, because I was 90% asleep.

I liked the video and the narration :)
  •
  • han 1 year ago
I really liked this. I'm a big fan of narrations and yours was excellent.

We have toward 10 alarms to try to wake us up in the morning: more than one on his cell phone, 3 on mine, and two on the radio alarm clock. We set it for different time increments so that the alarms won't stop after a certain number of snoozes.

I don't even know how we wake up sometimes, but usually a bad song on the radio or the dogs barking will work.
  • Caroline Martin 1 year ago
Why thank you! I'm glad I tried something different.

Yeah, I think that's how I'll be eventually, 20 alarms. haha

hate waking up. it's always weird when i try too, that middle part of almost awake when your body and mind are fighting with one another. one is saying get up you have to go to work and the other is saying no fuck you sleep good. im happy i don't have to wake up at 6am anymore. and no classes before 10 starting soon.

  • Caroline Martin 1 year ago
Why thank you! that mean so much!
  • Sam King 1 year ago
Well thank you becuase I really cannot stop listening to it. There is something about what your saying and how your saying it. Utterely amazing.

I would also like to note that the fact that your waking up to Sufjan is pretty amazing. I basically think we should be friends.
  • Caroline Martin 1 year ago
Yes please! I added you and i'll be watching your clips tomorrow.

I think you'd benefit from a device called "clockie" which is essentially an alarm clock on motorized wheels that rolls all over the bedroom when the alarm goes off, so you have to wake up and chase it....on the other hand, I destroyed mine with a brick....

That said.....I liked this...very well thought out and said.

This had an NPR feel to it. The way you narrated it. i've been listening to a lot of NPR podcasts these days to my ears were sharp for it.

Eat - breathe - fuck - pure human ... you got it down to the essentials there indeed... lol j'ai beaucoup aimé your clip, glad to know i'm not the only who switches the alarm's place every other week...

Dear Caroline: I watched this. I loved this. I forgot to comment on it, but am I not human? Do I not bleed? Am I not forthcoming in all other aspects of our relationship? In the future, when a piece such as this evokes such in my chest cavity, I shall not fail to express it in the deepest and clearest of ways. And you must not stop providing me with chances to succeed at doing so. YOU MUST NEVER STOP.

  • Caroline Martin 1 year ago
Adam Holwerda, you are my hero.

I really enjoyed that! I love your commentary too. Really interesting!

I use Awaken.app on my mac for my alarm and then Nocturne.app to make my screens really dark & lower the contrast; that combined with the fact that I'm pretty much blind as soon as I wake up in the morning means I spend about 2-3 minutes each morning searching for the mouse on the screen before I can turn off the alarm by which point I am usually (but not always) awake! :D
  • Caroline Martin 1 year ago
I don't have those apps, where can I get them? I was thinking that's the sort of thing I need to wake up.
  • Georgie Hammerton 1 year ago
Nocturne is at docs.blacktree.com/nocturne/nocturne and is freeware

and Awaken is at embraceware.com/software/awaken/ and is $8.95

It's the best way to start the day - unless sex is an option in which case save the $8.95 lol
  • Scruff_E_Guy 1 year ago
well sure.....but then you'd have to smell your partner's morning breath
  • Georgie Hammerton 1 year ago
Well that all depends on which position you choose I guess..? But good point Scruff! It's a good thing you're here to think ahead before we all make some kind of horrible mistake! - I mean individually; not in one mass vimeo-orgy or something!
  •
  • DaddyG 1 year ago
    Aaauuughhh!

    (opens wallet)

I've never been more willing to spend $8.95 in my whole life.

This is very good. How'd you start the camera?
  • Caroline Martin 1 year ago
when my first alarm went off i had a note that said "start your camera!" and so I did, and then I fell back asleep. What you see here is the second alarm. (10 minutes later)
  • Brooklyn Kitchen 1 year ago
Cool. I wish I could sleep like that. My sleep is very shallow and I wake up easily. Sometimes when I don't even want to.

  • David S Kessler 1 year ago
That's pretty much me every morning too. I'll make so many sacrifices in my morning just for a few extra moments of sleep.
I like this video a lot too. i like when people are not self conscious in front of the camera and, well, you're not conscious at all.
  • Caroline Martin 1 year ago
hahah! that actually made me laugh out loud. thanks!

i teared up watching this. Partly its because im in that kind of mood, but "that" mood can only be brought to teary eyed frutrition by something deliciously slice of life-ish or epic.

I like'd this video 'cause Sufjan is a great choice and I use two alarms to wake me up (alarm by my bed, not sure if it wakes me up anymore and my cellphone that I stash away somewhere new every night). I still manage to crawl back to bed and wake up twenty minutes before school starts.
