I've been plodding away at this vidblog for months now - trying to get to it on the weekends or after work when I have time. I'm especially fond of this footage, and especially glad I brought my camera last year, because it was the last time I saw my grandpa before he died.

I wanted to make something meaningful with all the great footage that my dad has shot over the years as well, it's fascinating to watch us when we were so young. I feel bad for friends who only have photos, video is such a better medium for capturing the joys of youth.

So, this is it. I'm glad to have it done by Christmas and hope it's a fitting tribute.

My favorite part about your vidblogs is the short, seemingly random shots that may seem odd to the average viewer, but undoubtedly have a huge emotional memory attached to them by you, Justin.

It's not a video for the world; It's a video for you and everyone that you share those memories with.
  • vtmiller 10 months ago
Interesting- I'm new to this video thing, can you talk more about the process, equipment, and ideology behind vidbloging?

After all these pre-college years with my family, I just now purchased a nice "walk around" video camera.

I now regret every penny that I ever spent on anything silly, when I could have bought such an incredible way to remember my life as a young person. I took plenty of photos, but they just don't compare to video.

I posted a video about a week ago of my dad holding our little dog while the pup tilts his head from side to side. It's such a dumb little video and such a small little thing, but I never want to forget that moment as long as I live.
  • justin plus 10 months ago
I would have been so furious with myself if I hasn't brought my camera last year. I recall debating ... "ehhh do I really want to lug this thing around with me for another Christmas?" -- but what you see on this -- my grandpa driving away -- that was literally the last time I saw him alive. To have that is just so precious to me, to be without it would have been a longstanding regret.

That was really nice. I loved the audio tracks mixed with the different video tracks.

This makes want a camera that records 24/7. I have a grandpa at 92 and I will be taking the camera this year.

I really like the reverse shots and unique texture random shots that add so much to the segment. It was so fitting to hear all the goodbyes to grandpa. Very touching.

Wow -- yeah my grandpa was born in 1922, so he was getting up there. It seems like that is when things are so fragile, even though he was still a tough ol' bird when he died (had a heart attack while trimming a lawn at a local park that he loved). Capture those moments - get him to tell you some stories from when he was younger. You'll cherish them.

This is so wonderful. I had yet to start making videos when I was spending most holidays with my grandfather. By the time I had begun my video-making, he was in poor health. You're fortunate to have had the foresight.

    Thanks for posting.

Thanks man, when we're old, we have to make sure our kids record us in hyper-3d or whatever they'll have then ...

The reverse footage had an unusual emotional effect. It was like the filmmaker trying to reverse time emotionally - not just technically. I think the music helped bring out the emotion too. Great choices.
  • justin plus 10 months ago
That's a great take on it - I was looking for a way to make the old footage look distinctive so it wouldn't be lost in the mix with the new footage. At the last minute I tested reversing the footage and really liked how the candles blowing out looked, etc and decided to go with it. It gives it a surreal, somewhat haunting feel.

    bye grandpa Johnson.
Merry Christmas Justin and the rest of the Johnson clan,
I hope you guys are celebrating his life, I doubt he'd want you guys to be too mournful.

    Love ya Justin.

It's sad when someone goes away, but it's as natural as being born. It's just good to remember, and be thankful for the time we did have.

Because of this I think I'm going to film Christmas Eve.

I really enjoyed the parts where you made the footage in reverse, it made it seem like the past was getting farther away, very neat.

Another Beautiful peice. It makes me appreciate my Grandpa, i will start taking more videos of him, i will start taking more videos of everyone. This moved me.

I really liked all the VHS grain, was any of that real or was it a filter? or let me gues, you took a sample of VHS grain against black while you were capturing the home videos and then you keyed out the black, Am i close?

i liked the HD upgrades to, i just love old video formats.

Great video justin, i have to ask, was this your opus?
  • justin plus 10 months ago
The VHS grain was indeed done the way you described! I liked how it looked over the other footage as well. It's so natural it didn't feel like a stereotypical 'bad tv' effect.

My opus ... I'm not sure. I certainly worked hard on this for a long time, tweaking it until it was how I wanted it. It deals with a lot of themes that I felt I've covered in past vidblogs but not quite as extensively. Opus, I'm not sure, something I'm proud of, certainly.

I've been lugging around my Canon GL1 for years now (which I actually got as a gift from my grandfather, so it's only fitting I suppose).

It is not simply your work Justin, this is a life time asset for you, your family and for generations to come. And you are nice to share and save such great things.
  • justin plus 10 months ago
Thank you! Yes, I sent it along to my family. My mom showed it to my grandma. I'm not sure her reaction, but it certainly is good to condense these moments down into something short and more watchable than just raw footage, though the raw footage is precious too. My dad has been an excellent documentarian for my family so it must be in my genes :)

    Great Video!!! Btw This:
"I feel bad for friends who only have photos, video is such a better medium for capturing the joys of youth."

I couldn't agree more.I feel like on video the person lives on through that footage and anytime you watch it they're right their next to you again. I'm on my last year of college and just dropped more money than i should have on a nice hd canon and don't regret it for a second.
Kudos on the touching video. Thats something your kids will watch when your older.
  • justin plus 10 months ago
It really bring ya back, watching old footage, doesn't it? I can watch a vidblog from 2004 and feel like I'm back in that room, having that conversation, with those people. It's remarkable and hypnotic.

Hey Justin, this is a beautiful video. Thanks so much for sharing it.

I am new to the world of video and am about to buy a camera and plunge into making vidblogs. What are you editing in? I have iMovie and am wondering if that is good to get started with.

Also don't know if you have a recommendation for a camera in the $800-$1000 range....and would you recommend flash or other format.

I'm a journalist and writer, and have shot photos for many years, but am just getting started in web-based multimedia storytelling. Any and all help is welcome. I'm asking you because your method of storytelling really resonated with me.
  • justin plus 10 months ago
Thanks Sarah! I'd suggest a Canon HV20 or HV30. You may also want to look into the jvc gz-hd6 or the panasonic hdc-hs9. As far as editing software, I use Final Cut Pro. I'd suggest Final Cut Express. It's much much better than iMovie :)

Flash based cameras can have some issues with the compression they use, basically it makes editing and rendering much much slower than tape based cameras. Certain formats work just fine, but cheaper cameras I've found a hassle to use with the flash cards. You really can't go wrong with the Canon HV-series. Best of luck!

I was touched by this splice of life video...I loved the getting into the car ending...how important to record the minutiae of everyday events like saying "Goodbye". Wish I had met my grandfathers; you have this wonderful tribute.
  • justin plus 10 months ago
It's was very fitting. Going through the footage before, and then after he died was a very different experience.
  •
  • -GO- plus 10 months ago
That was very profound. For most, the greatest moments in ones history are not those found on television. They are exactly what you have posted here.

hey man, i really enjoyed the video. I think your editing was excellent and the parts of the video where you were traveling were edited like a pro. It flowed seamlessly.

The subject matter couldn't have been picked more fittingly for the type of editing you did, not very many people can do what you did.

I never knew my dads parents, it was said this past year because my dad aged one year past the age his father died :( a very moving video, well done.
  • justin plus 10 months ago
Wow, yeah, my mom's dad died when I was just a little baby, never got to know him. It was good that my dad's side of the family has stuck around longer. It's a privilege to meet the people genetically responsible for putting us on this planet
