Jakob Lodwick's videos (360)
Channels / Albums (3)
Reggie improvised this song a few weeks ago. It was his first video with his electro-harmonix 2880, a looping machine with more flexibility than his normal Line6 DL4.

We shot it at Noah's place; he did the lighting. William helped with the sound. I hope we do more work as a group, just getting together and experimenting.

Oh, also, Reggie is going to start working on a new solo album soon. Keep in mind that his Vimeo clips are usually recorded straight into Garage Band and are improvised. Think about what he'll produce when he's in an actual studio and can write out his songs and evolve them.

Nice, I love Reggie. I saw a guy doing similar live sampling music recently and it was really cool.

I love how the thumbnail of the photo appears in the activity box under "Jakob Lodwick tagged It's Over by Reggie Watts."

He's going to be in Portland soon for the TBA (the same arts fest UB3 is in).

Yes, I highly recommend his TBA show for anyone around Portland. He and his collaborator Tommy Smith are putting together tons of original video and music specifically for the show.

I'm pretty excited I saw this, I just extended my stay in Washington until the 12th and we plan on visiting our friend in Portland some point before the 9th; this is perfect!

Ok, was Reggie on a Soulive album? I just bought a Soulive record with someone named Reggie Watts featured, and I am pretty sure it's him. Either way, bad-ass grooves.
  • party ilardi 8 months ago
I'm pretty sure its the same Reggie Watts. I saw a bunch of videos with Reggie and Soulive on another video website whose name I care not to mention.

Oh, cool. That would confirm it then. Thanks!

Jake, we talked about this once regarding music videos. i would love to see more videos that had nothing to do with the person making the music. unless that's actually what the song was about. like, "here i am in front of my electro-harmonix 2880, here comes the bass liiiiiiiine."

it seems that we're all still on level 1 of music video making where the main imagery we see is people playing instruments. so boring! what do those images have to do with the actual songs and what the person is saying?

level 2 which you see every now and then is putting images that kinda maybe fit together with the vibe or some of the words of the song. or it's a very awesome sequence of images put to very cool music. spike jonze and michel gondry do this a lot. still, it's two separate things thrown together. does that one white stripes song have anything to do with legos?

i think the next level is videos with images that are a part of the what the song is saying: words, story, vibe everything fully integrated and complimentary. it's images we're talking about here! let's point the camera anywhere but at the dude making the music. :)
  • nshack 8 months ago
Yes, but live performances are spiritual experiences that should be documented, well. Watching the sound emanate from that creative soul is incredible.
  • George Ko 8 months ago
Erick, I find it interesting that instead of categorizing music videos into various "types," you've decided to quantitatively/hierarchically value the "formula."

I live neither in the NW or NYC. I'm glad this video was created because it allowed me to "see" Reggie and "witness" his talents.

Well done Reggie, Jakob, et. al. Thanks for sharing this improv session with us all.
  • Jakob Lodwick 8 months ago
This is not a music video; it's a video of a live performance. There is a big difference!

Erick, our initial conversation about boring music videos was valid, but I have an addendum. If the performers are naturally interesting, I think they can be the centerpiece of of a video. For example, if I'm about to watch a KISS music video, I want to see Gene Simmons in makeup.

A group like Nickelback is another story. In that case, it's the director's responsibility to fill the four-minute video with something worth watching.
  • Erick C. 8 months ago
i smell you. i just think that artists can go much further in a video than simply taping a performance.

my point is that since there's already videos on vimeo of Reggie performing, eventually i would love to see a video about what he is SAYING in his music. i think that his music is much more interesting than an image of him pushing buttons. i dunno, i think that Reggie would agree with me. :)
  • Jakob Lodwick 8 months ago
I think there is another level we could take it to, yeah. We could come up with something elaborate or interesting that could be planned independently of the specific song he improvises. For example, someone could have danced along to this song. I don't necessarily want to translate the lyrics into literal imagery, though... at least not in the case of Reggie's improvised songs. I see value in the live performance, which means we can only complement the music, not literally translate it.
  • Chris Garcia 8 months ago
Erick... Yeah, I agree that artists can go much further in a video than simply taping a performance, but the beauty of this particular video, besides the clarity and quality of the image and the actual subject, is watching the shit develop, and just marvelling at how Reggie pieces together an intricately layered opus at the top of his head. I find capturing this live, spontaneous creation in vimeo form is much more interesting than editing images over the music. This is the next level shit right here.

I think for fun, you should make a video of this song. With Reggie's permission, of course.
  • keith 8 months ago
I can see your point, but this performer's main gimmick (not meaning this in a negative way) is the use of the live sampling. Eventually though a combination of the two would be great. I'm actually finishing up a music video of a friend that I hope to be posting soon. Much the opposite of this and maybe more on your version of "level 2"...
  • Erick C. 8 months ago
awesome keith. let me know when it's done, i'd love to see it. i think the point Jake made about the song being improvised is very good and something i hadn't realized. i think where we differ is that i value writing over amazing improv and narrative imagery over a stellar performance. alas, to each his own. :)
  • Reggie Watts 8 months ago
All valid points! This was very fun to make because of the resolution and environment. I think there will be some nice surprises in the future. I love imagery that abstractly embodies the mood of a piece of music. We'll see..

The quality of this image has to be one of the best I have ever seen on the web. I know you are using an amazing camera, but how about your conversion codec? Can this even be in flash? Or is it all camera?
  • Jakob Lodwick 8 months ago
I exported from Final Cut as a 640x360 video with h.264 compression. I believe the bitrate was 2200kbps for the video track, and 64kbps for the audio (it was mono; otherwise I would have done 128 or higher).

Either way, you can download the original file and inspect it yourself.
  • keith 8 months ago
Yeah, seriously great compression quality. As I've noticed with experience though, good lighting and fluid slower motion will produce excellent results. Not to mention Vimeo is still using higher quality compression than most (please keep it that way!)

This is great. I agree with nshack about the image quality.

Also, I really like the improvised nature of Reggie's music.

I recently noticed his name on a CD that I bought a couple of years ago, a bunch of New York downtowners and jazzers called MYLAB. Is this the same Reggie Watts?

I would be very surprised if it were someone else. I don't know of any other Reggie Wattses, and he's known for doing all sorts of guest appearances. Basically, everyone who makes music or videos wants to work with him.

Reggie Watts is great in this video. And Jakob you did a great job with the backdrop. The effect worked to bring out the Reggie Watts due.. And to show his true talent. Nice job for all those involved.
