1. Words in Motion?
Another experiment, this time it's all about sound and motion. I wanted to take some unusable footage (before I threw it away) and time remap it to the beat. I used Trapcode SoundKeys to isolate specific levels within the wave spectrum to produce data that could then be used to effect opacity and also drive the time-remapped footage.

I would complain about the shadows, then i've got the "unusable fotage".
Nice work. What cam d'ya uses?
  • Craig T plus 9 months ago
The shadows in the 'spinning' beach shot? Tough shot without a steady cam! Had to motion track the footage which then gave it the overall shaky but steady feel which I really like.

I borrowed a PD150. No colour correction done. It's obviously SD and quite old now but produces great looking images. I've only ever used this and a XM2 (GL2) and a VX-1000, the PD150 has a much better colour range (maybe not on paper) but in my opinion :D

really impressive middle section and kaleidascope effect in the middle is impressive and the spinning section after reminds me of a deck pletter on a set of 1210's turning, very nice effective sections
  • Craig T plus 9 months ago
The spinning section at the end is actually the part I have reworked and that will replacing this version in the next couple of days :D thanks for your comments!

Wow! This was gorgeous! I went to your tutorial, but I use Final Cut Express; any suggestions for a newbee on some simlar techniques?

I have never used FCP, sorry Todd. I think Sound Keys is probably available for Motion on the MAC. Google 'Trapcode' and check out there website.

That's INCREDIBLE, Craig! I looove this work!
Do you think it is possible to do this manually (assuming I have enough patience) :)
Thanks for posting! Waiting to see more
  • Craig T plus 9 months ago
Thanks ZhiC. What software do you use? If it's After Effects your running, select your wav in the timeline and look for the option 'convert audio to keyframes' in the layer dropdown or right click the layer and look for the option. This will create a null object that will have the left, right and both channels keyframes, use these to manipulate your footage :D Hope this helps

This looks awesome. I think the motion tracking in the beginning turned out to well. Who knew a shaky camera could produce such a nice effect.

I know right - the joy of experimentation!!

I'm going to guess he was using a PC hybrid w. AfterFX.

    I could be wrong though.

Slow PC running vista 32bit and yes After Effects CS4 was used along with Premiere CS4 :P

I like the beach shots. Great colors and contrast. I worked with the PD170 during my studies, which is quite the same and it really does great pictures. We filmed the same scene with a HD-cam (FX1) and it wasn't better at all than the PD170.

I also like the way you tracked the beach shot but didn't masked out the shaking borders. Great idea to use it for the sound.
  • Craig T plus 9 months ago
Thanks for your input Dino. I did always wonder how good the FX1 is in comparison, so good to hear what you think. Although it is HD and thats a must these days, clients need to hear you say HD otherwise they just go elsewhere.

Fantastic, is that hard to pull off?
  • Craig T plus 9 months ago
Not at all man, just take some old footage that you don't plan on using... get a tune with a good range of beats and use the techniques mentioned above to get the keyframes and just try and think of cool ways in which to manipulate the footage using the data :P

Cool. Did you pre-process the audio to choose frequency ranges, or is that done in soundkeys? Sorry I´m too lazy/busy/unficused to sit down and check it out myself today :)

Man this is a great effect. I wish I could just figure out how to utilize it in the FCP application. I cant figure out how to get that data then implement it to effect the opacity. Any help?

Andrew you need After affect not just FCP!
