Dude. I thought they fixed the slow pre-order problem because my download this morning at 7am took like THREE SECONDS! Bad news...

Yeah I spent about 10 minutes doing the same thing you just did. So I downloaded it illegally because I'm impatient. Hopefully it comes back up soon so I can re-download it and pay for it simply because this is a great way to distribute music.

Dude this is the same exact thing I did when I hear that the album was out :P Then I did a google search and found some blog with the link. It took me 20 minutes to actually download it because it got on digg.

(check out my tumblr : [redacted] )
  • Jakob Lodwick 9 months ago
come on, Ben, your blog has nothing to do with this.

Blake, I think 3d60 was giving Ben the sound of traffic that he claims to like so much.

This is a really good idea for some sort of usability-design-blog site thing.... project... I love the tone of it and how you show the confusion. Do more of this.

Wow, I had no idea it was that obfuscated. I knew about the store website from a blog that announced the Pre Order process, but you're totally right that this is way too hard for people to figure out.
  • Ian Lucero 9 months ago
Like i said when i messaged you, "why is the site so retarded?"

Now i just get a blank page.
  • 3d60 9 months ago
    obfuscation is rife...
  •
  • neil epstein 9 months ago
Ha. it's weird - last night radiohead was forwarding to inrainbows.com, odd for them to change it overnight on the release date.
  • bk 9 months ago
    is it?
  • Ian Lucero 9 months ago
sometimes the site works and sometimes you get

    "SSI error: recursion exceeded"

I think wait for a like a week or 3.

As per usual with the internet these days, a google search with an obvious search string ('new radiohead album') gets you where you want to be faster than trying to intuit the link path.

  • Joe Worters 9 months ago
The page is back up now. AND THE ALBUM IS AWESOME!
  • NZA 9 months ago
Agreed but I am disappointed w/ Videotape as compared to the live recordings/basement recording
  • Joe Worters 9 months ago
Really?? I quite like the album version, the live versions are cool, i reckon their live version will be a hybrid of the old live versions and the new studio version.

  • Andy 9 months ago
Hah...I did EXACTLY what you did, thanks for putting it into video. I ended up googling for "in rainbows" and discovered inrainbows.com. That puts you right into the store! Well, I guess being smart about how you distribute your music doesn't make you good at UI design...

    unbelievable!

I wish my friendly neighborhood corner mixtape man had the new radiohead. I'd gladly pay him $5 for it. Although, now that I think about it, that distribution model is way too old.

I like raidiohead, always have probably always will but they really go out of their way to be "out there." This video is a good example of how psychadelics and designing websites are both great, but not at the same time.
  • Jakob Lodwick 8 months ago
I agree; the idea of offering something for sale but making it into an artsy challenge really pisses me off. I have plenty of time to relax in their weird world when I'm laying in bed with headphones on; when I'm at work (ie, the place where I buy music) I only have a few minutes to spare.

why did you not go to
    inrainbows.com/ ?
  • Jakob Lodwick 8 months ago
    I didn't know about it...
  •
  • Ronen 8 months ago
Their website is apparently designed to drive traffic to bittorrent sites.
  • Nils Kraus 8 months ago
    so true :/
  •
  • james omega 8 months ago
well. typing inrainbows.com into a google search field would take as much effort as searching for it in your preferred torrent website.

could have been an OS X firefox issue. maybe they designed their own site too along with album distro.

  • Jakob Lodwick 8 months ago
if I knew the album lived at inrainbows.com, I wouldn't google search it, I would go there directly. but I didn't know that -- I assumed that Radiohead's new album would be at radiohead.com.
  • james omega 8 months ago
they could have done a better job on their site, for sure. but the sales figures so far (no official releases yet, but soon) just goes to show how successful the distro. method was. assuming that the news sources were correct, 1.2 million downloads on the first day is impressive.
  • Stuart 8 months ago
All they had to do was put a link to the inrainbows.com site on the radiohead.com homepage!! Life would just have been slightly easier isn't that what the internet is all about? An oversight on their part. I guess we'll never know if they actually lost any downloads because of it!!
  •
  • bk 8 months ago
Approx. 1.2m first DAY downloads at an average price close to $8. Kanye's first WEEK put less than a third of that in his pocket. Thanks UMG.

Music that people consider valuable -- what a concept.
