These things are just plain cool. High-powered piezoelectric (ceramic) discs vibrate like speakers at something like 1.7 MHz (far beyond what we humans can hear at 20,000 Hz), and cause water to break up into small molecules which hang in the air - and thus, misty fog!

The power supply for this thing is 48 Volts at 4.5-4.8 Amps.. this thing draws a decent amount of juice, but it's totally worth it for this Hallowe'en party I've got planned. ;)

For anyone interested, I got this online from mainlandmart.com - they make a variety of these fogger things; I went high-end, but you can get single-jet units for $20-something.

awesome, i'd never heard of these. cool video too, what camera did you use?

This is from a Panasonic/Lumix DMC-FX01, a subcompact 6 MP camera that records a surprising 848x480 .MOV (MJPEG I believe) at 30fps. The video specs were actually the prime reason why I bought it!

The only thing I think it misses is equally-nice audio, as the recorded stuff is something like 11 Khz mono.

I believe these are used in humidifiers too. Also, that website is the most ghetto thing I've ever seen in my life.

Correct, they work on the same principle. Don't put your finger above the "element" near the water surface though.. feels like being poked with an invisible needle or something. Bleh! ;)

The mainlandmart.com site has been more or less unchanged since 2000, I think.
