Previous Week
* what they will count are ballots cast on election day
* they will count the votes, not the intensity of the votes
this is how candidates win elections!
How did Bush win?
- focused significant effort to identify and turn out vote in Ohio
- concentrated, focused effort
- this is the difference between excitement/ideology and success
CRITICALLY IMPORTANT: strong record keeping
if you convince that person to vote for ron, you have to know:
- who is the person
- how do i reach them again to turn out and vote
- list of supporters who will turn out to vote on election day
phone number, email, street address, to touch back on primary election day or caucus day
This presentation starts with victory at election day and works BACKWARD from there to show us the path it takes to get there.
---
day of election
- going by phone and door-to-door to people previously identified as supporters of ron paul
- to go to the right doors and call the right phones we need to know who are these people
- watchers: people at polling location
have a list of eligible voters in precinct - cross referenced with ron paul supporters - this person is there crossing off the list to know that X of them have shown up so far, need to be able to access information on whether or not they've shown up
not our job to increase overall or uncommitted turnout - at this point we're there to increase ron paul turnout
---
72 hours before the election:
- calling into supporters to remind them that tues is election day
- calling, mailing, door-to-door (grease the skid ahead of time not 5 minutes before)
- resolve concerns (any way we can make it as easy as possible for our supporters to get out - are there special needs or circumstances? - difference between 100% and 85%)
- requires identification of who are our supporters
not trying to drive up the number of people who vote, driving up ron paul supporters
phones
doors
electronic communications
IMMACULATE DATA FILING
who they are
how we can contact them
get it right
if they support someone else or are halfway - we need to know this - they have to be people who are going to support ron.
if someone walks up to you and says "i support ron paul" that needs to be in the database
---
late surveys: Are you for Ron Paul or not?
(if yes - we want you to turn out the vote)
---
absentee ballots - optimum program to run is the same thing, just do it before the opening of early voting, once early voting starts - team of people dedicated to turning out votes early
have a way of checking people off the list once they vote so there is a smaller list as you near the actual election day
--
1) if we've identified a voter ask them: will you be an absentee ballot?
2) if not a ron paul voter and they apply for an absentee ballot they are a sure voter, communicating positive ron paul message is advisable (not as important as GOTV but since they are certain to cast a ballot we have to give our best message to them)
---
"supporter identification" is different than "voter identification"
phones, doors, email (in that order)
be serious when asking someone how they are going to vote (don't come as an advocate, don't wear statements on your clothing, dressed conservatively,
to avoid spending extra time with people who are telling us they're not going to vote:
ask preliminary questions like "are you a republican?", "do you intend to vote in the upcoming primary?", "do you think things in the country are going in the right direction"
