How do you like AVCHD? Ive heard it's hard to edit with. Are you using Vegas?
  • youdiejoe plus 2 years ago
AVCHD is fine, Vegas 8 slices through it like butter with a hot knife.

Wow. Now I'm imagining being so small, I could walk under the edge of a drop of water like that little bloke at the start.
  • Forrest O. 2 years ago
thanks for pointing out that perspective, yes that would be something

i wonder if ants imagine being so huge that they could shake droplets from hair

i love your videos all three so far. i dont think ill ever be satisfied with anything other then hd from now on!
  • youdiejoe plus 2 years ago
Yes that is how it begins, HD has been a passion since I first saw it back 1990.

Back then I had a part-time job working at a Good Guys store in SoCal when they opened here in L.A.. They had a system set up to show off this new fangled HD technology. It was setup with 22" screen and a playback tape deck. I think it cost upwards of 100k at the the time! It was only in the store for a long weekend. Every free moment I had I found myself, as did others, walking over to watch the screen. It looked as many described it, like you were looking out through a window.

So I have had the HD bug for 17 years, and the last 5 years have finally brought it to a price where I didn't have to bankrupt myself to own some gear.

The greatest fun is finally having a camera (again that is affordable) that can shoot at this quality. I find myself wanting to shoot everyday, is that so wrong? ;)

I sat here watching this with my jaw on the floor (well maybe not on the floor, but I feel the over-exaggeration is necessary).
    Incredible!!

    Looks amazing! Lens setup?
  • youdiejoe plus 2 years ago
Stock Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T Lens
  • youdiejoe plus 2 years ago
when I say stock, I'm saying I have nothing extra on the camera. The Carl Zeiss lens that is in the camera is all I'm using. Pretty impressive results from a built in lens.

Are you doing anything with the color in post? Looks too good.
  • youdiejoe plus 2 years ago
nope, nothing. I shot and edited this in about an hour. Just the camera and Vegas Pro 8, mpeg streamclip to MP4 then up'd the file to the Vimeo mothership. Maybe it's that California sun... ;)
  • Marshall 2 years ago
What kind of settings did you have your camera set on? I'm just amazed at the color, clarity, detail....I have canon hv20.....I want to do macro stuff like that too but I dont know how to make it look that cool! Enlighten me
  • youdiejoe plus 2 years ago
point and shoot, I had it on automatic for all settings. I wish I could give you a magic list, but it's just plain point and shoot.
  • Marshall 2 years ago
    60i?
  • youdiejoe plus 2 years ago
shot at 1080/60i, edit and then output at 720p HDV format, then MPEG streamclip encodes the MP4 at 100% quality, all the other settings at default.

hi! what kind of macro lens did you use on this shot? what brand name and model of the macro lens?
  • youdiejoe plus 2 years ago
Hi, this has been covered in several posts above, but in short... This was shot with a stock Sony HDR-SR1. No extra lens were used just the stock camera lens.

That was really cool. I really like the water drops on the leaf. I did so macro stuff awhile back an got close enough with some screw on diopters to see reflections of the trees in the drops.

did you use the built in mic as well?
  • youdiejoe plus 2 years ago
indeed I did, these cameras have a built in 4 capsule mic that records in DD 5.1.

I must say the mics on this camera are as impressive as the quality of the pictures it can produce.

  • So, when are you going to be hired by the Discovery Channel?

Awsome job! And I'm shocked to learn you shot this with an off the shelf 'consumer' camera ;).
  • youdiejoe plus 1 year ago
Thanks, yep some consumer cameras in certain shooting situations give pro rigs a run for the money.
