78. Fixing Bathroom Wall Part 1
77. 1st Day in Rome
After finally getting around to finding out if the crack in the cheaply constructed bathroom wall was something to worry about - hmmm... We found out it was bad. Behind the crappy plastic lined bath wall I found some wet and sweaty plaster falling off it's wood backing. The wood itself was moldy and pretty easy to tear away.

After stripping away most of the plaster, Kamala bleached the crap out of the fungus then we were able to put the heater on there for a couple days and dry it out.

That must be an old house to have plaster walls.
  • Ian Lucero 8 months ago
It is pretty old. It is from 1949.

Yeah the plaster walls work wonders on our WiFi signal.

My parent's have a house that's about a hundred years old. I've helped my father repair water damaged plaster. It's quite a job.

I'm researching on how to get rid of it permanently.

Know of any surefire ways to do this?

Check out NRDC.org website. They worked with a lot of people in New Orleans to clean up their houses after Katrina. Unfortunately bleach does not kill mold. You have to strip the entire wall but it looks like you did that already.

They guy at the local hardware store told us the same about bleach not really doing the job of "killing" the mold/fungus. He was saying it just turns it white. We're hoping that it will hold it back for a few months until we can come back to this project. But I've found that if you strip the crap that is infested with the fungus, get the walls dry enough (using heat) and then sealing it up real good - it should calm things down for a while.

    We hope.

    Seaweed!

I know you can get anti-mold sealant (for filling in the cracks between tiles). Maybe you can get anti mold plaster.

The other thing you could try (although you might already have) is an extractor fan to suck out all the steam when you're taking a bath or shower.

We do have a vent with a very powerful fan in the ceiling. It works great. The stuff we're getting in the walls, I think, was due to the crummy carpentry of the previous owner. Notice in the photos the half-ass attempt to insulate the wall. What's that about? At least they tried. Sure. There are little cracks here and there in the plastic "protective" sheet that once covered the wall. When I shower I tend to lean up against the wall to get at my feet or legs. You'd think the wall would be pretty solid but I guess one day it gave way and we ignored the fact that water was dripping into the cracks.

But something tells me this goes beyond wanting to scrub my feet thoroughly. As you can see the seaweed thing. It just looks like things have been growing under there for a while.

We have plans to redo the bathroom but not now. We don't have the money yet. So we are going to temporarily seal this wall with hardy board and caulk then cover it up with a strong piece of linoleum and seal that up good.

I'm just trying to figure out how to get rid of the fungus, mold, mildew things. I have asthma. I wake up at almost the same time in the middle of the night trying to figure out why the heck I'm having an asthma attack.

    It's crazy.

Bleach will kill it. That's what the plumber just did in our overflow pipe.

10% bleach solution in a garden sprayer & a good review of the structural members by stabbing the studs and sheathing w/ an ice pick to find dry rot or punky portions which are often not visible so you can edit out the "nastiness" of rot prior to your upgrade you have got solid healthy wood fibre. I have often seen insects where moisture is present and that is a headache of another color.
Insulate too, even modestly, will make a difference. (respirators are essential for anyone with Asthma working with dust of any kind especially mold).
That seaweed thing is telltale, and is fairly common in kitchen & bath renovations where leaks
were either not noticed or neglected, It's "nicer" than finding petrified rats!
(still in the midsts of renovating our house too.)

    lucky!

thanks for the luck wishing. All the stuff we're doing to bathroom right now is all temporary and we'll be tiling and putting a huge window above the tub. Gonna try and make the bathroom the wackiest part of the house.

Thanks. The bathroom is better now. Though temporarily fixed, we hope to really do work on it very soon.
