The main point of this video is to show footage from the HV20 camcorder under different lighting situations and with different types of subjects and motions. It's also a whirlwind recap of my family's trip to Barbados last summer, mixed in with lots of shots from around Los Angeles.

All footage recorded in 24p mode. Edited and color corrected in FCP. Reverse telecined with JES Deinterlace. Recompressed for Vimeo with MPEG streamclip. You might notice flash frames on some cuts, but I know why and won't do it again! It's the fault of my hasty export and not the camera or footage.

If you had exported in the .mp4 container instead of the .mov one I would have been able to watch this on my big TV via my PS3 or xbox360. :)

    great transitions.

i really enjoyed how this was seemingly mundane but the editing and music really brings everything to life.

Great way to test a camera... I think I will do something similar with my new Panasonic SD-1. Great cuts.

I think it's time for HD Los Angeles Channel! Some very nice shots, the hand in water shot, the rotating pan around the stuffed swan (how did you do that?), the sunset over the pool.

Sign me up for the HDLA channel! The shot with the stuffed swan... I put a board across a swiveling chair, weighed it down, put the camera on the end of the board, then spun the chair.

I loved this video. It was the type of video that I watched in normal view, then watched in full screen.

Then watched in full screen again.

This is excellent. As mentioned above, the music and editing created an enticing quality from what would normally be average clips. It also shows off the HV20 quite well.. good job!

    Hmm great video!
    On a side note,
Am I correct in my observation that HV20 has low light problems? Most current HD camcorders have this problem unfortunatelly.
  • Matt Dyer 2 years ago
Glad you liked it. All of the low light shots are pretty grainy. The compression I did for uploading tends to mess with those shots the most since they're so noisy. On the original tape, it's more of an even grain. It's possible to use a slower shutter speed to get a brighter exposure, if you don't mind extra motion blur. In any case, the HV20 does its best under bright light. It even handles direct sunlight very well.

    Just awesome.
Love the quality of the footage, the cuts, the music.
This video did not only make my day but also strengthened my decision to buy a HV20 ;)
