I think this may ... no ... it must be the longest time since I've released a video blog. My entire experience here in NYC has gone without an official vidblog. It's sad since we've had over 30 people stay with us at one time or another, and so little of that I caught on film. I guess my excuse was that I was already making so much video at work, that I didn't feel the need to do anything more.

I regret that decision somewhat. It HAS been extraordinarily busy as of late, but I'm going to do my best to keep up from now on. Even if it's just recording 10 minutes a week, that'll add up to something nice in the end.

Please leave a comment below. Thanks guys. There will be a 'party montage' video blog coming up next. Had a ton of footage left over that didn't feel right in this piece.

  • This is a great video blog. I enjoy all the different shots.....for some reason, watching this makes me feel warm inside. Warm...yet detached...does that make sense?
  • justin 6 months ago
You can probably sense the general warmness of the situations without the knowledge of the precise people or the surroundings that create that mood ... so yes ... I think that makes a lot of sense.
  • Nick Douglas 5 months ago
I am curious about one precise person: What's with Waldo? Because he gave me an idea for a city prank.
  • justin 5 months ago
That was my friend Lee. He made a Waldo costume for Halloween. I think he did a damn good job. We also shot a promo with him in his outfit.

I can sense the jist of a Waldo prank and I'm sure it would be hilarious!

I love your vidblogs and it is great to finally be in one.

I guess this might be your first HD vidblog and it looked really good.

You gave Moby a credit at the end. Is that a track from his free music site from the link on your tumblr?

  • justin 6 months ago
    Yes sir it is!

  • justin 6 months ago
Haha, yeah, that was fun. I think I'm still linking to that video somewhere on onetrick

Was that Anderson Cooper at 2:00?

Now I really want to visit you in NYC -- did I tell you I'm applying to NYU and Columbia?
  • justin 6 months ago
WE'VE GOT AN ANDERSON COOPER at TWO O CLOCK! MAYDAY MAYDAY!!!

Yes, it was. Randomly saw him after filming 'The Egg' (aka Yolkback Mountain). It was pretty funny. He was short, but intimidating-looking.

NYC is the ONLY place to be! Everywhere else is boring and lame. I have full faith you'll be joining our ranks here soon.

Such a great video. Made me want to buy that Canon gl1!
  • justin 6 months ago
Half was shot with the GL1, and all the stuff at work was shot with a Sony V1U. I basically cheated and scaled up the GL's dv footage to an HD res. Still looks better than normal compression, but you can tell it's not quite as slick as the real hd.

That's what I love about Vimeo. Great videos that look awesomely artistic and professional with useful advice and tips.

Even dad looks pretty in HD!

I loved it. especially the part when you did the split screen. it felt very "collateral" to me. that movie always makes me think of your style.
  • justin 6 months ago
... if "Collateral" starred Anderson Cooper and Dad. (wait, that might be awesome ...)

Oh and I thought the same thing when I saw Collateral.

Justin, that was great! I loved the paper lanterns and fence shots. Along with your family and heavy doses of Mr. Rubinstein and Mr. Nelson. What's a video without Lee?
  • justin 6 months ago
Thanks Dre! No video is complete without a minimum if three joyous Lee laughs.

very nice mix...the music went expecially well with the speed of the shots. Where did you find such appropriate music? It is something I always have a hard time doing. Anyway, great job and all the best!

Yeah, the music is always key to these for me. When I find something I think may be a contender, I just play it along with the initial cut-down of the video to see how the two play together. There's a TON of great music for video blogs at mobygratis.com - and it's not illegal to use either! You just have to request the song to get the non-commercial rights to it.

awesome! tenth-ing the compliments on the conceptualization and editing. Really beautiful, especially the trailing voices into the next scene (1:50-1:53). Did you use Final Cut Pro/Express? I'm struggling massively with iMovie '08.

Hi Justin, i met you at PodCamp Boston, i helped with the BlogTV webcast, (camera). I work as a freelance editor in Toronto and i like your editing a lot. Subtle and powerful and fragile, but full of possibilities. I don't know if it is the music but in my mind simultaneously i can see a stream of water sparkling from a small drinking fountain and then a clear stream in the rockies... more so in the first few minutes.

After i watched your movie, i felt inspired to make something similar here in Toronto. wel'l see...

did you get all those people to sign releases?
  • justin 5 months ago
Hey Scott! Great to hear from you.

I much appreciate the kind words. I like the fountain concept. You should def check out mobygratis.com for music.

I actually did one of these in Canada ...
    vimeo.com/77350

No releases. Most everyone is close friends and family, so I'm not worried :) Plus this isn't for anything commercial, just for me to help remember my life vividly when I get old.
  • scottwitter 5 months ago
thanks, just checked the video out, it has been a long time since i have seen such powerful editing and interpretations, the backwards unfocused fireworks had big impact on me and having someone in the frame as they happen is profound.

Things i have learned being an emoter / listener, observer, is that people with mental illness can have very seductive personalities and enjoy the attention. People can pass 'things' on to others .... good and bad, be careful please. One of these people in Toronto stabbed a friend of mine in the face between the eyes, left a perm scar from forehead to chin. There is a big big issue up here on homeless and mentally ill people and a lack of funding for proper institutions and the want of certain gov't heads to americanize canadian health care, so this is what we get. People are not properly cared for and left out on the street in the most touristy parts of the city. ... i think vancouver is worse. Not to detract from your work, just an aside.

I have some footage from Halloween in Salem with Geo i need to put together, similar kind of fanatics screaming.

Before vimeo i didn't think there would be a place for me to put personal explorations... so hopefully you will see some stuff from me soon.

here is a few links to some water drinking fountains.

I searched page after page in flickr to find my minds eye image of a drinking fountain with the right water and this is what i found. a combination of a concrete/marble round pedestal fountain clear blurble and an easy stream from a steel pedestal drinking fountain.

    farm2.static.flickr.com/1350/1121899058_b872032101_b.jpg

listening to some old pink floyd and watching full screen flickr slide show of my search results for water fountain... hundreds of great images... floating by...

  • scottwitter 5 months ago
and thanks for the Moby music link, I signed up.
  • justin 5 months ago
    Wow! Best comment ever!

The fireworks shot has long been a favorite of mine. This was also shot mostly on a Panasonic, which gives such great image.

I love those drinking fountain shots - thanks again for the epic comment!

Incredible! I loved how you did a close up of that boy's face and focused in on his eyes. The feeling of wonder mixed with naivete was tangible.

Oh and the random Anderson Cooper footage was awesome. I love him.
  • justin 5 months ago
Anderson Cooper ... short ... buff ... scary.

The camera guy filming him yelled at us afterwards for fucking up his shot, hah!

Great stuff man, every time you post one of these it makes me appreciate what we as artists do, so much more. Capturing memories on film is the best way to leave behind our legacies. Great work man. You make me feel like I wanna visit New York even though I live here.
  • justin 5 months ago
Thank you Jon!!! I respect your skills, so coming from you, high praise!

I do these so I have a sort of record of who I am/was for when I get all old and lame. To prove that at some point, I did cool things.
