Christina Mills Steel is STEEL5000 (New Hope, Pa.USA), a young, multidiscipline artist who uses pop culture as an esthetic reference and inspiration to reflect about social and political issues. STEEL5000 uses video as her first mean of expression, as well as photography, performance and music. In almost all of her work she uses herself as a tool to communicate her ideas. A corrosive sense of humor is a constant in her pieces; letting her approach the most serious matters in a very accessible way. She received her BFA in 2007 from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. Upon graduation she won the Gelman Travel Fellowship, a trust fund for young artist to realize a year of work in a foreign country, with her final senior piece, an experimental documentary, The 8th Wonder of The World. STEEL5000 realized her fellow year in Buenos Aires, Argentina from March 2008-9. This May she will present and discuss her various projects and pieces from her past year in Buenos Aires. She currently lives and works in Madrid, Spain.
