47. The New Mediators
The New Mediators is a design practice that helps to clarify complicated situations. By designing graphic language systems that function across print, video, interactive and performance formats, it proposes a new role for designers and a new approach to transparency in an increasingly complex world.

New Mediators are practitioners who combine methods from design, journalism, and narrative analysis. The result is designed transparency — information that is not only made available, but accessible, relevant and beautiful.

This introductory animation attempts the method advocated by the New Mediators to explain the project itself.

Its made in After Effects, graphics would have been designed and made in Illustrator.

    No need for flash anywhere.

I'm also a designer and I think this is an excellent point of view about the future of our discipline and methods.

    Nice work!

The sound will turn the video more efficient.

Mr. Jarvis. Very well villustrated. Such a design practice is indeed much appreciated when new technologies keeps emerging below our fingertips at an exponential rate. It is up to us as designers, developers, human technology scientists, to make such practices compulsory. How can we practicipate in such a quest?

Really pleased about this project. I foresaw this sort of presenting about a year ago while being stoned out of my mind. Knowing that PowerPoint and pads of paper are seriously lacking in both complexity and "spreadability" I've begun to take courses in Digital Animated Design, and I'm learning Adobe Affects right now. I've already gotten quite deep into the program and I'm just curious about the complexity of your AE files, like in your last video "the crisis of credit visualized" about how many layers did you use, about how many files in the project window, and how did you get audio to sync up? I believe your "new mediators" stamp is a success because it really is the key to bringing out the complexity of our mental imagery to be shared with the world.

I have the images in my head now all I gotta do is practice being able to.. use the programs. lol But I'm sure the programs will become simpler and more intuitive as time passes.

I'm looking for talented designers like Jonathan to launch a New Mediator production company. If this describes you well, feel free to reach out to me.

I have the business know how and an appreciation for the art. You could be the other half of the equation, the creative talent. Together we can change the world, and make a fun living.

If this proposition appeals to you, send me an e-mail: castano_edward "at" gsb.stanford.edu .
