Just messing around one day, with my Canon Rebel XT DSLR.

Oil being poured into a cup of water.

Music by Bonobo // Recurring

edit 4/24 6:30am:

WOW! I'm glad everyone is liking this so much! I really didn't even put any thought into the timing or editing of this. i just went through the sequences i had, in order, and tossed some music over it. The frames are pretty much un-edited. I think I changed the white balance, and added some sharpness, and that was all.

I wish I had an actual video camera, that could capture some of the things I see, when photographing my subjects. IMO the time-lapse looks neat, but does not do it justice.

A lot of people are asking how I did this. It's pretty simple. I just put the camera on its' lowest jpeg setting, placed the camera into continuous mode, and locked the shutter down with my wired remote. The oil is being dumped into a tall cylindrical glass, with about a cup of water in it. The whole thing is lit from behind by a diffused clamp light.

Creative idea - I wonder how a little added color (maybe food coloring?) in the water would mutate this?
  • Shawn Knol 7 months ago
Thanks Edvard! Your videos are amazing!

with this setup, the water is deep, so it would just take over everything and look like a gelled light. i did try mixing the dye into the oil, which came out kinda interesting. the little dark packets of dye would explode with color, when making contact with the water.

there's an old grateful dead movie, where they had an oil/water/dye mixture placed on top of a projector, next to a speaker, sandwiched between a petri dish, and a sheet of plastic-wrap. The plastic-wrap would vibrate to the live music, creating quite the show. i would love to recreate it some day.

Please would you explain how you made this (are you still poring oil while the camera is set? — is the camera on for an hour on timelapse? —)

    thank you
    J.

with shutter speeds this fast, the rebel xt's buffer fills really fast. i can only capture about 20-30 seconds real time, with the smallest jpg setting. so, that's how quickly it pretty much takes for the oil to even out, on top of the water. i can't remember the fps of the camera off the top of my head (i think it's around 2), but i know it's nowhere near the speed of the newer models.

im basically, just dumping about a tablespoon worth of vegetable oil into a large cylindrical glass cup, with about a cup of water in it. it's lit with a diffused light-source, from directly behind.
