    great work! Loved the editing...
  •
  • Thanks Blake. Im having some issues rendering this sucker out in HD through After Effects but once I figure it out I'll post that version and remove this one.

well done. Did you do much color adjustment, or did they just happen to sync well?
  • Actually I color corrected the entire sequence so it looked slightly green and also played a little bit with the levels so that the blacks would feel really rich. Thanks for your comment :)
  •
  • I'm diggin' this edit, Michael. Forgive my ignorance, bruh, but, how are the split screens produced? Can that type of effect be done in FCP? Or, do I need to get down with After Effects (or Motion) to achieve that result? It seemed to be more than just video layering. Thanks for any clue you can slide me :)
  • Hey Thanks Clarence. I used AE for only a few of the split screen shots, like the beginning shots where the clocks time up with the music. The rest was Final Cut.

Here's a hint: when you have a clip selected in your Final Cut timeline, go into the "motion" tab and play around with the cropping function. That should get you started. From there, it's just a matter of what you like. Take care, man
  • Alli Gallixsee 2 years ago
you can also use the crop tool in your tool bar. I actually just figured out a real application for that recently after using FCP for 7 years!

Michael- this is really a fantastic use of split/geometric screen. I haven't seen anything done like this. Totally innovative. I don't even want to think of how long this took you. Did you use a steadicam in that office scene or was that an office cart? =) It looked fantastic either way. Incredible work!
  • I used an office cart actually. I had no intentions of lining up the 2 shots in one with that initially. I had 2 that i really liked and when it got down to it, I figured I'd just used both at the same time! Thanks for your comments. I appreciate it

Beautiful video. I really enjoy this style of video. Kind of like Photography+.
  •
  • Thanks Chris. I thought the same thing when I shot some of these things. I like taking simple objects or situations and bring out the best of them. Check out some of my photography work at my Photo blog if you like pictures.

I really like the sequence at 00:56. This turned out really well. I liked how the clock, snow, and steam were all sped up, as they are things that we traditionally think of really slow. I also really liked the split screen effects. well done.
  • I actually had my camera on a cart that we use at work for that shot. I just slowly crept the camera closer and closer to our printer, hard at work mind you, knowing that I'd later speed the footage up. The split screen was totally by accident. I just couldn't figure out which shot I liked best out of the 2 so I decided to go with both! With a little playing around with it, it seemed to line up pretty well so I went with it.

Really nice work, love how the second hand on the clock was timed spot on with the music
  • Yeah I like that too. I like at the beginning right when it goes black and the record scratches. The it opens up with the "tri -shot"

Quite mesmerizing, the rain, the clouds nevermind that start with the clocks being so on the beat.
  • Haha thanks :) I must admit, the hands on the clock timing to the beat just happened to be a stroke of luck that worked out in my favor.
  • CTD3 2 years ago
Ahhhh the sweetness of unintended synchronicity!
    (on the beat no matter!)

you ve made me wanna see your entire work.you are very very good
  • 2 years ago
I completely agree with Nickolas. This is a gorgeous piece of art, one that is perfect down to the music selection. I love your use of split-screen, too; it reminded me of one of my favorite artists, the title designer Pablo Ferro. One of his most famous works was the opening titles for Norman Jewison's "The Thomas Crown Affair." This reminded me of it, so vibrant and rich.

Also, a question: what snowy town was that? I'm from Cooperstown, NY, and your scenery reminded me a lot of neighboring towns up near there.

Great work, and I can't wait to see what you do next!
  • Thank you for the kind words. I have not seen that movie but a guy I work with loves it. Ill have to check it out now that you've mentioned it. I live in Rochester, NY. I shot this at my apartment, my parents house, and in spencerport where I work too. :)

This is a really great video. It looks like you applied a drop shadow to the boxes in the upper right in both the keyboard and crosswalk sequences. Is that done in FCP too?
  • Yes I did apply the drop shadow in FC. Is it too much you think? A friend of mine didn't like how thick the black borders turned out. She thought they should be a touch smaller.
  • Richard Lewis 2 years ago
No not at all. I like the thick borders too. Again, outstanding work.

I agree with everyone - very nice video and really inspiring. The borders seem to be inspired by the dark lines in the images you collaged together here 00:27. That point, with the lines of the black railings and lampost are nicely echoed in the borders. Loved the synchronisation of the music with the editing and clocks ticking! Well done.

Nice Video! Just one quick question though, did you play with the colour settings in post-production or use different lenses? Just wanna say the music was great. Keep up the good work.
  • Thank you :)

Yes I did all the color correction in After Effects.

Hi Michael, very nice composition, in camera & in editing, too.

What camera did you use? Was it HDV?
  • Thanks a lot Hugo. Yes, this was HDV. I use a Sony FX1.
  • Hugo Crexell 2 years ago
Oh, I knew it! It is one hell of a camera. Personally I own a Sony DV VX2100P, but I think the FX1 is the choice if one should go HD. Very nice framing and the colours are really expressive. I saw your other work as color timer, incredible! :D
  • Thank you very much. Yea the camera is really sweet but there are some obvious limitations with it.

I've been doing all my color grading in Final Cut and After Effects but I'd like to get my hands on "Magic Bullet Looks."

that's an amazing video!! the music is absolutely perfect.

do you use a DoF adapter? or does the FX1 have good enough depth?
  • No i faked it in spots. The one shot that's up high was done in after effects using a simple mask and blurring it. Thanks for watching :)
