1. HV20 - Rainy Day Cinematography
Slow motion and 24p test with canon HV20. No 35mm adapter, Steadicam, Effects Software, etc was used. This is just the raw footage with "Color Curves" applied in Vegas 7.

Shot in TV Mode, 24P, Shutter 1/120, All custom image settings put to "-1". Slow motion shot in 60i.

nice one solomon.. saw this on youtube .. good to see it in hd ... will ur windows download play in hd on my ps3 ?
please post more of your work here :-).. ant .. uk
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru 7 months ago
No, you need to re-encode it in h.264 .mp4.
  • Anthony Johnson 7 months ago
how bout other downloads in .mov ?... will my ps3 play that or do i have to re encode too ?
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru 6 months ago
The PS3 does not support .mov. You need .mp4 with h.264/AAC in it, or WMV or DivX/XViD with the new firmware.

me 4. Got mine off ebay for $500.00! It's on it's way now.

I had some questions about the 35mm adapter if anyone can help me:

What and where can I get the best ones (brand names, etc.)?

This may be a very stupid question, but the 35mm adapter is just an adapter to connect a multitude of lenses correct? As you can tell, I have not studied camera lenses that much and am just getting into filming.

    Thank you to whoever helps!

wow, how is that possible? is the optical stabilizator the best in the world, or do you have 20 years of experience in hanging cameras?

People out there have no idea what's coming up with consumer video. Just yesterday, I was listening to some film dick rant about how ugly HDV is. If I had his email, I'd send him this.

    Awesome stuff.

very nicely done! how did you keep the HV20 dry? :)
  • Solomon Chase 7 months ago
Taped some clear sandwhich bags together, put em over the camera. Made a mattebox out of tin-foil.

  • Javed 7 months ago
Hey Solomon, how'd you manage to make the shot fairly steady while running up a hill without using a steadicam? Did you use some sort of camera-mount to hold the whole thing?
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru 6 months ago
He replied on this. Just his tripod. Keeping the tripod steady, condensed, is the cheap way to get steadier shots than handheld.
  • Javed 6 months ago
Ooops! My mistake, didn't read that sorry. Thanks for that, I think I'll ditch my 'GlideCam' for the hand-held tripod method... the GlideCam wobbles like crazy, it's like your sailing on a cruise ship in really stormy weather.
  • twoneil 6 months ago
Same with the Steadicam Merlin. Although it's easier to control and balance, you will still see the slightest 'bump' and 'swing' of the camera. I have to practice more.
  • Javed 6 months ago
I've seen your Merlin test footage, it looks a lot better than the GlideCam. This thing works rather well when I'm moving about fast all over the place, but when I stand still it either continues with this constant rocking motion (left-right-left-right) as if it were placed on a rocking-chair. Or it spins completely upside-down and revolves back to it's original position (very steadily) as if I were an astronaut. They should provide some sort of button or trigger which locks the mechanism, so when you are still you could lock it then when you're on the run again, you just release the button on the fly. Problem solved... I've made a custom adjustment and it works brilliantly now, it's what I'll be using from now on. I've also attached a leg-like part at the bottom, so when you lock it, it also works as a MonoPod.

Tripods make excellent steadicams if you know how. There are how-to videos on YouTube. It's just a matter of holding them at the center of gravity (extending the center post, etc) and sometimes adding a velcro leg-weight. I've seen really top-notch tripod steadycam work! Saves mucho $$$

How in God's name did you export the HD? I've been trying all day and each test ends up grainy and nowhere near HD. I'm using Sony Vegas 8.0

    Thanks Bro!
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru 5 months ago
    Here: eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/11/09/exporting-with-vegas-for-vimeo-hd/
If after this you still don't get good quality, it's because you didn't shoot right.

Hi Solomon, I've ordered a HV20 camera myself, and I love you sandwich-bag solution against the rain. (I live in Norway, rains 90% of the days. hehe) I'm just wondering how you made the tin-foil mattebox stick to the camera/bags?
  •
  • Jeffrey Lee 5 months ago
    Hey,
    Great Video!
    quick question.
when we you were exporting, what setting did you use to get max quality?
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru 5 months ago
He exported at 720-24p WMV, using Sony Vegas. The original file is available for download to check the bitrate.

then their entire advertising budget for this
    unit ....

How long did it take you to get this video
in its present form? Don't tell me 5 minutes
    because I'll have a coronary.

C'mon... dazzle us somemore. What will

Gotta admit after making two dvds of the various clips of footage I've downloaded from vimeo and watched in my living room, this was the clip at the top that made me decide on this camera. And I bet you this guy's was a pro paid by Canon to do this! After all, where are his other clips? HA!

How did you do SlowMotion on Camera?
you said 60i... isnt shooting in HDV24P done in 60i automatically??

How would you change 60i or other features?
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru 4 months ago
PF24 is not the same as true 60i. PF24 is 18 progressive frames & 12 interlaced all wrapped in a 60i stream and requires pulldown removal to make that PF24 format true 24p. True 60i is 60 frames and 60 fields in a 60i stream.

So he shot in PF24 the normal scenes, removed pulldown and edited. He shot the slow-mo scenes in true 60i, he didn't remove pulldown (not required), he added it to the 24p project, and slo-mo'ed it. Clear now? :)

I'm curious. your slo mo footage looks the best of all the slo mo test footage I've seen (no artifacts or artificial jittering etc).
wonder if you could share your workflow with us!

    Thanks!
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru 3 months ago
Please read my comment above. It's explained there.
  • James 3 months ago
thanks eugenia. I did read your post. I was hoping on getting a bit more detail because I tried what you explained in AE and FCP and got jittering in the slo mo footage whereas Solomon's doesn't at all (might be because he's using Vegas and that programs just that damn good, but that's hard to believe).
I was hoping he might be able to shed some light on this issue himself.

    cheers
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru 3 months ago
Not sure we can give more details for AE/FCP, as we both use Vegas. On Vegas it's simple to do, and you might only need to "disable resample".
  • James 3 months ago
hey, eugenia. figured it out. thanks!

For anyone trying to get great looking smooooooth 24p slo mo footage and having difficulty finding a workflow that renders out the beautiful slomo your expecting (like i did) take a look at this helpful article (if you have After Effects)! Worked wonders for me and I'm recommending it to everyone!

Slow Motion in 24p Filmmaking by Thomas Worth

    *HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

    Hope it comes in handy!
Note: you might need to Separate Fields to Upper when you interpret the footage though (i did)
