52. Ultimate Boston - Letus Ultimate 35mm Film

Behind the scenes blog of "Ultimate Boston":
tomguilmette.com/wp/my-blog/archives/1588

I have a Letus Ultimate in my possession and with the busy schedule of the Playoffs, I have not been able to use it enough. I managed to put aside time to shoot for an entire day, from 5am to 6pm in the city of Boston, Massachusetts. I met up with a friend of mine, Craig Stevens, and we shot a lot of great images. Craig also shot a bunch of still photos of me in action for my behind the scenes blog.

We pushed around all the gear on a Magliner cart for almost 12 hours. It was close to 90 degrees and many people were outside enjoying the weather.

I did many time lapses with the Celestron 114GT telescope panning/tilting head and all of them where set at one frame for every one second. The motor head was set at "5".

Most of the footage in this short was filmed with the Letus Ultimate. Some of the Red Sox time lapse and the baby geese at the end were shot last spring in Boston with the Letus Extreme. You can see the difference (as far as seeing the pattern of ground glass in the shots) compared to the super sharp and clean Letus Ultimate.

The shooting locations for this short were the banks of the Charles River, Paul Revere Park, Quincy Market, Post Office Square Park, South Boston Waterfront.

I shot this short with the Sony PMW-EX1, Letus Ultimate, Vinten Vision 3 tripod system, and Nikon manual 35mm film lenses.

I used mainly these lenses: Nikon 200mm f4 tele, Nikon 300mm f4.5 tele, 50mm f1.4, and the 16mm f2.8 fisheye.

I color graded in post with my own secret brew using Magic Bullet Looks. I also used Twixtor to slow down some of the footage to 26-55 percent. The ripples in the water look great when processed with the Twixtor 4.5 plug-in.

I shot most of this film in 720 30p in over crank mode (60 frames per second). A few of the shots were shot at 30p.

The music is "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers and it has been remixed by Jacques Luconts, Thin White Duke. I must thank the kind people at Post Office Square for allowing me to shoot inside the beautiful park.

Tom, excellent stuff, one of my favorites of yours now, loved the shooting! I'd love to help you shoot someday, if you're ever in need of another AC, let me know!

I like this especially the colors .
    Was this captured uncompressed ?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
No, it was captured on SxS cards at 35mbps XDCAM. Format 720p 30p, some footage overcranked at 60FPS. I popped the colors with Magic Bullet Looks.

Glad you had some to get out and shoot. Really enjoyed it. Nice capture of everything and everyone out enjoying spring...... great feeling after the winter grey.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
Yea, it was nice to see all the people in the business district sitting around the fountain in the park enjoying their lunch break.

Stylistically, I found a lot of similarities between this piece and a number of British filmmakers, namely Danny Boyle and Edgar Wright for starters. The whip pans and the rampings were nice touches (which is what made the piece feel of British persuasion). Colors were vibrant and cheerful, and that Killers track was nice (never heard that version).

This really makes me want to visit Boston again!
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
i love boston. i just cant believe it has taken me so long to shoot a video like this in the city. i will do another one soon.

I love learning about the workflow almost as much as watching the video. All of a sudden Boston looks so nice!
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
i should shoot a video of the nasty side of boston. i might get hurt, but it would be very visual.

This must have been last Saturday. It was a beautiful day here in Boston then. Nice looking piece. I have the EX-1/Extreme but I'd love to check out the Ultimate sometime if you'd like to meet up?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago

I think I've watched this about 12 times so far, I really do love it. Congrats on it hitting the front page of the HD channel. I like that more people get to appreciate how great this really is.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
you are just saying it because you made a few cameos in this one!

Also, the 60fps overcrank is amazing, producing great slow motion. It's too bad Vimeo only allows 24 FPS so we can't see the slow motion in all of its 30FPS glory.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
still looks good on vimeo, however. i have it 30p on my website.

Great vid. Boston is personal for me. Seeing the positives, and clean...my take is a little italian family, a "rich part of town", great depression, family failures, and sprites of pretentious ....my own "vengeance" (hardly anything to me to know the past) is driving a junk car I fixed, from northern maine, bomb around the city, and look forward to going home. Knowing my "kind" built it.

Great and inspiring work, as always. So you mentioned that using the Letus Extreme causes the ground class to appear in your shots. I'm having the same problem and was surprised by this, considering the $10,000 investment for the entire package. Are you saying that the Ultimate doesn't reveal the ground glass? Argh...
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
The Ultimate is much cleaner, but the Extreme (given the relative low cost for a good 35mm adapter) works well in most situations. The only time you will have trouble with the Extreme is if you stop down the film lens past 5.6. When shooting the film lens wide open (or close to wide open), the ground glass is invisible. Most people do not run high speed shutter, when shooting with the Extreme. I have noticed that when running high speed shutter at certain settings, you can see some of the pattern in the ground glass. The Ultimate does not have this problem.

All of this info is public knowledge and talked about on the web. I am not breaking any news here if people have done research on 35mm adapters and the limitations of them.

I have been shooting with the Letus Extreme and Letus Elite for over a year and I have been very happy with the results. Look at the rest of my Vimeo videos to see what I mean.

Very cool images and tune. You're making me miss Boston. Me thinks sports shooting may not be your true calling ; ) Keep up the good work.
  •
  • How did you attach the camera to the Celestron 114GT? Does the motor system attach to any tripod head? is it a 100mm ball?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
I pulled the telescope off, and mounted a "L" shaped bracket right to the tilt gear in the head with that magic putty stuff that they sell on tv. It is NOT a 100mm ball. I just used the cheap plastic sticks that camera with the telescope. See my blog link at top of page for pictures.

the footage is great! Though, I dont get why so many on vimeo put electro-orgasm music to such beautiful films. I'm no stranger to the love of electronic music which is why I feel sure in saying that it just does not fit these types of inspirational films
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
i chose the "elecro-orgasm" music because i was planning on doing a lot of fast moving timelapses. those types of shots just do not go well with too much else. have you ever seen ron fricke's "chronos"? if you do not like fast moving music, you will not like that film. personally, i think it is one of the best films ever made. most of ron's films are very inspirational for me.

Very well done, Tom. This would make a wonderful spot for a Boston tourism commercial. As a wildlife fan, I really liked the Canada Geese at the end.

Do you think you'll be purchasing the Ultimate or will you be content with the Elite?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
i will purchase the ultimate. i simply cannot shoot without it now!

Great stuff Tom! I noticed quite a bit of rolling shutter due to the cmos of the ex1 but you pulled it off in a way that it seemed normal.

    Love your videos!
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
yea. rolling shutter is present in the whip pans, but not really evident anywhere else. where did you notice it?
  • Matthew Robertson plus 6 months ago
thats pretty much where I was referring to. Other than that I didn't notice any ;)

I have no idea if tis is good or bad according to the people that judge these things but according to this retired OTR trucker I watched it from start to finish and did not even think of turning it off so that makes it pretty good to me.

Well done, Tom! I'm always amazed at your work. You do it so well! You definitely have a gift. I've always wondered how the moving timelapses work and now I know its done by a motor!

I have a few projects on here I'd like for you to look at and critique when you have the time! :)

    Hey Tom,
I really enjoyed this piece. I was hoping you would get this spring and shoot some great shots of Boston. The funny thing is... I was out shooting in Boston the same day, right on the North End Waterfront! What a great spring day to be outside shooting!
Great to see how the EX-1 just gets better with a more advanced 35mm adapter setup, too.
Great work. I was at a pub watching a bruins game hoping to catch a super-mo replay... and they gave props to you... right on!

    Tom,
Did you have to get signed releases from all the recognizable people on the video. I have been a still photographer for years and am starting out new in video. I was taught that as long as I didn't use someone's recognizable image for commercial work, I didn't need releases.

    Great Work! Par Usual!!
