11. Testing Phoenix 0.45x magnetic lens - Sanyo Xacti HD700
2 years ago
Just received the Phoenix 0.45x magnetic add-on lens to replace the 0.5x I broke. I went out to test it and this is a sampling of the results. The lens attaches semi-securely even without the ring -- just don't jog or bump into anything. The ring will probably make it a firmer fit.

Can't believe how small it is compared to the other one I rigged up. Image quality looks better, too. Full range zoom with the lens on as well as close focusing. Nice.

Pictures of the setup are here: members.cox.net/visorblue/images/Phoenix045x.jpg

Still pictures with and without the lens are here (all shot in Auto P and f3.5):

Note: There's two models of the Phoenix 0.45x magnetic mount lens, large and small. You want the large one, 06-450 (P06450 at Amazon), the small one vignettes in still mode at full wide (17mm).

Very impressive! Do you think the small is easier to setup?
Do you have problem with the picture's corners?Do the corners are rounded?
    Sorry for my english...
  • I haven't seen a small one yet. Here's a couple pictures of the Large on the HD700 so you can see the inside:

    And the ring:

I get no vignetting (rounded corners) with the large. No idea about the small one yet. Hope this helps.

    Thank you for your help.
I will buy this lens for my HD700!
  •
  • Just saw a still image from the smaller one, it vignettes on stills but not video according to the guy that bought it. So, get the large one. Back of my package says Stock No. 06-450. Amazon calls it a P06450.

I just received the lens and attached it to a strap to protect it if it falls down
It took only two weeks to be shipped from Amazon US to France !
It is exactly what my hd700 needed, thanks for this video

Thank's a lot to share your great discover ;-)

I have made a special paragraph about your lens-test in my "hybrid camcorders sample page"...
    (anjoyplanet.com/video/sample.html#hd700)

Are you still happy with this lens ?
  • Hi,

Happy to be included. Been to your pages and enjoyed what I found even before I bought the HD700.

Yes, I definitely still like the lens. I cut one of the mounting rings into two arc shapes to allow for the lens cap to fit and not block the flash when the lens isn't on. The result is a more secure hold than I got just attaching it to the camera without the rings. A picture and text are here: gallery.mac.com/crosby007/100133/hd700-ring-Text/web.jpg

I just watched the picures. Is there enough surface for the lens magnets to fix the lens securely? It looks very little surface for the lens to connect. I would be afraid to lose it at any moment? Thnx

    Thank's for details ;-)))
I read many forum and saw that many of these lens could be CHINESE COPY !!!
I only found 1 in NY shop (internet)
DO YOU THINK I CAN ADAPT TO MY CA65 ???
  • I've seen other brands, mine is a Phoenix brand. Seen them on ebay but you have to search (Phoenix 0.45x) and include Search Title and Description to find them.

I don't have a CA65 but think you could use it with it. Make sure you get the large one, very slight difference but the small version does vignette in stills, at least on the HD700.

You wouldn't have a clue if these lens would fit hd1000 ??? ;-)
  • I'm thinking they'd be too small. Plus, the HD1000 lens has threads (40.5mm I think). You have a much wider choice in lenses than the HD700.
  • sosna 1 year ago
Thanks for your answer ;-) right... yes you're right about 40.5mm, but I was thinking that the magnetic lens could be more convenient (you attach them only when you want them...) Cool thanks again ;-)
  • I stopped and looked at a HD1000 a coupe days ago. The Phoenix would definitely not fit, It's not even as big as the glass area of that lens.

You can screw/unscrew a lens on the HD1000 as you wanted. Most will let you leave them on and still zoom. A threaded lens is a LOT more stable, too. You can run, ski, skydive, or whatever with a screw on lens. With the magnetic the lens would come off.

Great video, thanks. I have ordered both the Xacti HD700 and the lens. I now own an Xacti VPC C5 and was in need of a new camcorder. The quality compared to the size is absolutely convincing. The lens is a valuable adon. Thanks for the test video.

@ Sosna, look a bit harder, you'll find a wideangle lens specially for the HD1000. EG Amazon or Ebay

I'm wondering if anyone has found a lens that works as well for the HD700... my searches on Amazon show it sold out, and Googling elsewhere has not been productive.

    Thanks.

Do you think that it would fit to my Praktica DVC 5.1? The lens is 30.75mm.
