Very well done! What camera and lens are you using may i ask?
  • Brian Stansfield plus 6 months ago
Thanks, PK! This was shot on the Sony Ex1 & LEX... I used a variety of Nikon primes, but mainly 50 f1.4, 85 f2 and a 105 f2... Steadicam shots were on a naked EX1, didn't have the lcd link cable so shot it blind. Thanks again!

nice man, im not normally a fan of the EX-1 but this looked sick!
  • Trevor Meeks plus 6 months ago
jeez, i don't know why someone wouldn't be a fan of the EX1 LOL, it's a fantastic camera. I love mine to death, and Peter, this is just a stunning piece of work for a 48hr job!

If you don't mind me asking, how did you get permission to shoot in the airport? I assume you were past security for the concourse shots - how'd you manage this?

Everything was really well done, the acting was convincing, and the camera work was very nice even if a tiny bit unpolished (which is to be expected for this type of quick project!)

Great job, and bigtime kudos buddy.
  • Brian Stansfield plus 6 months ago
    Trevor,

Our producer actually just called national airport's operations command and requested permission, we got our insurance policy bumped up to cover the shoot and went in for a quick pre-production meeting with the manager and were free to shoot from that point on.... It was pretty harmless, actually!

    Thanks for the great words!

Great vid. I wish I had time for one of those 48/5's, they've always been on the worst weekends for me. :(

The shot at :40 is my favorite. Very Michael Mann-ish and good visual seque from back of unimportant woman to protagonist. Love the slow motion

For 48 hours this was sufficient to keep my attention on the screen. Congratulations!

I'd be impressed even if it had taken a lot longer than 48 hours. Nicely done. I liked the attention to some of the more insignificant shots like the hands on the steering wheel and feet walking up the stairs. Even though simple, they lent feeling and depth that wouldn't have been there otherwise.

    Nicely done.

How on earth did you get permission to shoot in an airport these days lol

The EX-1 rocks, especially for shooting in cases like the 48 Hour Film Fest. We used it for our project, too: vimeo.com/channels/dgsaafbs

Not as pretty as yours, but I just got the camera so I'm a novice :)

    Great work!

I am also curious of how you got permission to shoot in the airport. Do you know some government officials?

Great film, great editing, great great.

An awesome producer, Matt Dixson, got us access-- see above for Brian's more detailed response.

WOW! What a perfect ending!!! I really didn't expect that. I would love to see more!! Planning on pursuing a longer version??

Very very impressive for 48 hour film. Your team has definitely got talent. I'd want to see this on the Big Screen.

    Keep up the great work!!
  • Brian Stansfield plus 6 months ago
Thanks, HALOTV! Not sure if we'll pursue a longer version, our actors are from out of state, so more coordination would have to be done...

We might add 1 intercut scene, but essentially we'd like to leave it alone as a 48 hour piece.

Thanks again for the great comments
  • Halo TV 6 months ago
I know how hard it could be to coordinate actors from out of state. I worked on a film that had a lot of that.

Oh my god, this is epic.

Well done, it actually looks like a real TV show, nice acting aswell ;)
  • Brian Stansfield plus 6 months ago
Thanks, Callum... we were going for a Michael Clayton/CSI look and feel, hopefully we accomplished something similar to that.
  • Callum Taylor 6 months ago
    No problem :)
Out of interest, did you use any filters/extra settings at all?
  • Brian Stansfield plus 6 months ago
This was shot completely clean... Picture Profile was really basic, gamma/cine3/-20blackgain... 77mm Sky on Fujinon, and as for post... I was going to run though MBL, but ran out of time, so no post filters were used.. VERY basic color correction was done to get the levels safe/true and color balanced. So in other words, you're seeing a pretty naked image.
  • Callum Taylor 6 months ago
The quality and imaging is fantastic :)

Loved it! You guys had a great story and cinematography. Filming at DCA was a real coup that added a wonderful realism to the location. The shots with the adapter were beautiful, but the switch to the built-in lens was occasionally jarring. Did the Letus not fit on the steadycam?

We filmed our 48-hour entry entirely on the 5D, mostly with an 85 mm f/1.8. I'm really pleased with the quality of the output, although we did forget the set manual white balance for a few scenes and it really shows.
  • Brian Stansfield plus 6 months ago
Balancing the Letus rig on the steadicam is really a pain... it's so top heavy you need a ton of counter weight and by the time you have it all balanced and level, the rig weighs about 80-90 lbs when extended off the body... EX1 alone with rails/ff/mb is much more manageable, plus with the LEX on there, the focus is so fine you can't fly the rig and pull fine focus... I mean, I'm sure there are much better Steadicam ops out there that could, but for this film, it was a no go... Also, we never really got to post, we minor cc'd some shots but just couldnt' get to everything we wanted to to get a uniform look... Hopefully, you're one of the only people who noticed the switch!

    Great Job!
What does your audio equipment consist of?
  • Zareiff 6 months ago
Because we were on the run, I used almost exclusively an Oktava 012 with a hypercardioid capsule, and a Shure m276 mixer strapped to an ammunition vest, and then running line level directly into camera. The "B-unit" stationed just outside of the airport used a Sennheiser 416 outfitted with a Sennheiser zeppelin and fuzzy, and was plugged straight into camera (no mixer, since they had no sound guy, so I made it simple for them.)

Did you have to pay for anything to shoot in the airport? I have to shoot at ATL airport, and I have to pay $500 per hour plus insurance. Im independent... I would like some help. --- Great short film!

    -Eddie
  • Brian Stansfield plus 6 months ago
Eddie, no, no cost involved, our producer called the airport operations and explained that we were doing a 48 hour film on zero budget, and they were super nice and just let us film there for free with a skeleton crew... No harm in giving them a call and explaining you're on a micro budget...

Great film... if I didn't know it was a 48 hour project, I could have expected a longer feature. Great framing and shots for a quick production.
    Lew
  • Brian Stansfield plus 6 months ago
Thanks, Lew... maybe if there was funding and more time it could be a feature! but, that's usually wishful thinking, thanks for the shout out!
  • Lewis Schucart 6 months ago
What type of camera did you use for filming? You mentioned 5D? Brand? Not what I think, is it?
  •
  • Alan Doyle 6 months ago
Jaw-droppingly good. This with no budget? And in 48 hours? If you could convince someone to give you a bit of cash to make a feature, I would spend every penny I have in seeing it at the cinema.

Absolutely glorious. Tell me you guys plan on doing this for a living?
  • Brian Stansfield plus 6 months ago
Thanks, Alan! Haha, most of us do production for a living, but I think all of us would love nothing more to do more creative filled weekends like the 48 more often.
