Once a year, analog synth enthusiasts gather to socialize and play rare and unusual musical instruments. I captured the May 2009 gathering with a Canon 5DmkII and a 50mm f/1.4 lens. I simply sat the Camera on a tripod, frame the shot as I would a photo, focused and captured.

The music was produced using a Euro-format analog modular, controlled by Volta. Aside from the drums (MOTU BPM), everything was analog.

i wonder what the guitar was routed into
and what kind of synth is at 1:43? it looks absolutely gorgeous

That, my friend, is a Synthi. It is the "James Bond Suitcase" version of the infamous EMS VCS3. Pin matrix. Vernier knobs. The 'On The Run' synth.

That's a sweet camera. The 1.4 lens also gives it a nice Bokeh effect. Gorgeous. Never has modular gear looked so dreamy. Nice soundtrack too.

THis is one of the most soothing videos I have ever seen. Really nice camera work, too. Love the song.

great shots! did you get any interview footage?
  • stretta 6 months ago
No, no interview footage, but the footage looked so nice from the 5D, especially the footage with human beings in it, that it had a sort of documentary feel to it. Maybe next year I'll ask visitors to participate in a recorded interview and edit that together. I think that would be interesting, and a refreshing change from a 'gear love letter' type of thing.

very nice. i love the image, and th boards are tough. question, you captured 30p, how did you get this to look so crisp and non jittery? i have problems uploading 30p to vimeo because it converts it to 24p.
  • stretta 6 months ago
I captured and edited 1080p @30fps. I was not aware that vimeo converted it to 24fps. Good to know, thanks.

Prior to uploading to video I compressed and scaled the 1080p to 720p using Quicktime. Vimeo still had a problem at around 1:45 on the non HD version, so I just forced it to recompress by replacing the file.

I suspect if you're having jitter issues, it has to do with your compression settings prior to uploading. I may get better results myself if I upload as 24fps. I'll start exporting my work out of After Effects at that frame rate.

Cool! I find the 1.4 DOF a tad too shallow sometimes... Just a tiiiiiny little bit.

Oh, the logo at the end is epic! ;D
