Fuckin good job dude! What do you mean by "first HD skateboard video"? That the entire video is in HD? Because i think theres already been some video shoot only in HD...no? Maybe im wrong..
  • Jason Hernandez plus 6 months ago
Thanks, what I meant by "the first H.D skate video"
Is that to my knowledge, It is the first
    "fully filmed H.D video"
Yes there probably has been a skate video put out shot "ALL" In H.D.
Maybe in Europe, maybe here in the states, but as far as I know, no filmer I know has had the camera long enough to make an entire video with it.
I take that back Ty has had the HVX a year before most, Filmers in L.A but he couldn't make the Lakai video all H.D.
I'd say 85% of the footage they already had was shot on VX1000/2000, from what I see.
So far the HVX has been used in a lot of skate videos, how I feel it's usually used is, to substitute film, say if there's a scenic shot, a facial, Time Lapse, B-roll. People tend to use the HVX/HPX
I feel like most skaters tend to not like it, they usual don't like the fish eye, and want to film on the VX1000.
When I went to work for Nike they already had the idea, and I had already moved over to all H.D, I sold my VX camera's, so there was no skaters asking me to use them.
I hope it's the first, all H.D skate video.
I've been breaking my back for it :)
    Thanks for watching.

Thanks for your answer. Thats right that all the new vids are a mix of HD and DV...

And what do you think about the fact of filming skate videos in 16:9? Im also filming skateboaridng in 16:9 and its true that when filming with the fisheye its pretty different form filming in 4:3... i want to know your opinion on this.. thnkx
  • Jason Hernandez plus 6 months ago
Well my over all opinion is, I love it...
I think it's time for a change, It so much more gratifying when you film a line, a single, etc... and it comes out the way you want it.
    Especially using the fish eye.
It's much harder to keep a skater in frame, considering that the average skater isn't short and wide (16:9) there tall and thin (4:3)
I feel it's easier to film something in (4:3)
Don't get me wrong I still like the look, it's just i was getting bored with it.
I also felt if I wanted another job one day outside of skating, it'd be smart to learn HD, and hopefully it'd open some doors, later on in life.
Now when I think of skating I think of it in HD, I think of how much more color you get, how much more cinematic it looks, so why not?
    Hope i didn't bore you.

HDP Films in Finland made a skateboard movie in all HD over a year ago for skateboard shop Ponke's. Here's a quick preview for it youtube.com/watch?v=3O5N0020bNE

It's not my work. Just my friends. Looked good with new filming techniques like cable cams etc. Too bad there isn't good quality version in the web.

Yeah Im taking that style of editing latley, especially with these guy's it's easy to, they all skate fast, and have that fuck it, type of attitude.

HAHA!! Awesome trailer bro, the budget for this video must have been very high coming from Nike(Well they do sell their skate shoes for over 140AUD here). I have pretty high expectations of this video with such a good line up too. So pumped.

    :D
  • Jason Hernandez plus 6 months ago
Thanks, but i've gotta say, NO!
NO, big budget for this one, NBTT, took the budget.
Don't get me wrong we didn't stay in Hostel's or anything like that, but from what I heard, we've got an 1/8 of the budget NBTT had.
Hopefully you'll enjoy this one more.
    Thanks for watching
    Jason H.
  • Jason Hernandez plus 6 months ago
Actually an 1/8 of the music budget...
  • B-Roy 6 months ago
Thanks for the reply man, I love your work. But I really pray to my Jesus that this won't turn out like another NBTT, haha no offense to you or Nike...
haha 1/8 of the music budget, holy crap, I guess the financial crisis wasn't as bad then though. Good Luck making do with what you have. I also really hope Sydney has a Premiere of this too.

Greta job man! I like how your doing it in HD but your not taking the artsy, slow indie-electronic music, approach.(Dont get me wrong it is cool but every HD vid has that) Your making the skatng look raw and fast like it should be, and the video being in HD will just make it even better. Keep up the good work.

Hey Jason great video can't wait to see the final result. Loving the fast paced editing. Your using the century Xtreme fisheye, correct? I'm currently looking into getting an HVX and am wondering if you have any advice on a quality fisheye for it. I know of the 16x9 inc. and am looking for something in that price range (around $500 give or take, not a few thousand like the Xtreme). If you have any suggestions i would love to hear them, or is the 16x9 the best way to go.

    Also Thanks for the Dolly,

    -Evan
  • Jason Hernandez plus 6 months ago
I've seen footage with that lens, and If $500.00 is what you got, then that'd be the one for you.
Me personally I think it's to small, image wise I don't feel like it gives you enough.
True your only getting a little more with the Century Xtreme, but to me it's worth it.
It's already a challenge not cutting off a head or wheels, so anything smaller would be a lot harder, but you'll adapt.
I'd also watch out for the HPX, it's lens is one of the widest in HD.
I think if 16x9 makes a lens for that camera then it'd have a wider image with the fisheye.
Im pretty sure I read somewhere they were making a lens for it...

Hope this helps, thanks for watching, and commenting.

Awesome trailer Jason, nice job! I love the HVX and especially with the Century Xtreme fisheye lens. I have the same setup now and I love it.

I really enjoy all of your videos, especially the Globe Skate & Create spot you did - so amazing! I shoot BMX but I find myself looking to a lot of skate videos for inspiration.

I live in NC and I've met Justin Brock once so if you ever need help filming him I'd be honored. He's good friends with my friend Zack.

If you have a chance check out my demo: vimeo.com/2618114

Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see Debacle.
  • Jason Hernandez plus 6 months ago
Yeah Will just watched it, it's rad seeing a lot of the same spot we go skate, all the Barcelona stuff, I bet you there's been a time when we've been out there at the same time.
I noticed you follow them skating, is that only when they do lines, or most the time?
So many rad tricks, I don't bike so forgive me trying to say the names, all the shit near the end was rad, the guy who rides the skinny ledge then turn it into a wallride down, the other guy who bunny hops that tall ass rail to 5.0 the whole thing over that huge grass gap.
The vert shit was rad, lots of stuff, i was siked on!
Well I wish I earlier I would've known there was a camera man In NC, that would've filmed Justin, I had to fly out to ATL 5-6 times, to film with the crew.
It'd have been nice knowing there was someone else there able to film.
Thanks for commenting on my stuff, and taking the time to watch.
When ever you post anything else let me know
    Thanks
    Jason Hernandez
  • Will Stroud plus 6 months ago
Awesome Jason, thanks for the kind words about my demo reel. I mostly just skate to film lines so I can use two hands on the camera for better control (since the HVX + fisheye is pretty heavy). But yeah, thanks for the response and I'd love to work with you someday if there's ever an opportunity. When will Debacle be coming out? Looking forward to seeing it. Keep up the great work!

    Thanks Again,

can u explain the difference between hd and dv and tell which something like a jvc viera would film in?
  • Jason Hernandez plus 6 months ago
Yeah it's pretty basic, i'll try and say it the easiest way possible, with HD you get more lines of resolution, with SD you get fewer.
SD looks like a square, HD looks like a rectangle.
Typical HD your image is anywhere from 960x720 on up to ULTRA HD well above the average 1920x1080
With SD it's right around 720x480/720x486
It usually dosent look right when you stretch out SD on a nice T.V, i.e flat screen/plasma/new T.V
Hope this helps, trust me im not the most technical guy, nor the sharpest tool in the shed, so, some of these numbers might be off.
    Don't quote me exactly.
Just think of it as squares SD(less quality)
    Rectangles HD(more quality)

hey jason im editing my first full lenght vid with final cut i only have to finish one part what to i do when im done export all the sections intro, parts ect.. then combine them on one time line then export them all together? also will each section loose quality the more i export it how can i prevent that ?

thanks man u rule check one of the promos on my page if u get a chance thanks !!!!!
  • Jason Hernandez plus 6 months ago
When I work on a project I work on each part individually, then once I feel like Im happy with that person's part, i'll bring it into my "main/final" sequence, this is were I assemble each individual part.
And usually this sequence will be my final one I export.
If you nest entire sequences, it makes it harder for you to fix any problems you have.
Also if when in your "final/main" sequence, your project is going to run slower, so only keep that sequence open when working in it.
    This is just my preference.
    Hope it helps
    THanks for watching
