This is my thesis film from Academy of Art. It's overall been done in about 3 months, therefore the quality of animation is lacking a bit. But still, hope you enjoy.

Great stuff! Fantastic story and visuals! i love the cardboard look, been trying to do it in my own animations (vimeo.com/4579500), may i ask what programs you use?
  • Aziz K. plus 6 months ago
hey daniel. thanks a lot. I used maya for everything. and the textures, i did in photoshop. the cardboard feel turned out to be quite good with just textures and bump maps. your stuff looks very nice too.

luv the animation and the song, not lacking even a bit :)
  • Aziz K. plus 6 months ago
thanks melissa, though it still has to be fixed in certain parts :)

there is this seriousness in this animation which makes the puppet move to each meaning of the song, gr8 :)

great work, i really like the story.
Render and design are really good, it remind me "litle big planet" on PS3.
Your technicals skills are really good, i was just a little disturb by the light who suddenly appear at 1min04s and turn off at 1min06s, but it's just a detail.

    congratulations and thanks for sharing.
  • Aziz K. plus 6 months ago
thanks mathieu. little big planet was a reference point for me, love the game and the look. I know there are some issues with the renders and all. Hopefully I'll fix those and re-upload!

Sometimes, the "like" of a video is not enough. Love the video.

Sadly there is no happy end. Hope there will be a sequel, where sad face finds other sad faces and gets happy :)

I did not see how the animation was "lacking" whatsoever; if fact, its far above anything I could ever do. Very expressive, and very good.
  •
  • Ideal Productions plus 6 months ago
superb! this is a great animation done! I love it but what it shows is that we're living in a pretentious world where everything is something to be sad about?
  •
  • cile bailey 6 months ago
Great music and wonderful work! Some times I relate... Remindes me of the old song "the great pretender" I think Sam Cook sang it.

  • Meezan 6 months ago
i think it had a great start but nothing after that. Not talking about the technical stuff, the story dint have a purpose. to me your point was not clear. Also nobody likes sad endings. if you are thinking of redoing this, please rethink the middle and specially the end. Your work has potential, keep working mate :)
  • Aziz K. plus 6 months ago
Hey Meezan. Thank you for your comment. I agree the story has some quirks but I don't agree with you on the fact that nobody likes sad endings. I do :)
  • Brennan L. 6 months ago
I have to agree. It's a metaphor for life, and in real life this does happen and it is sad.

The happy ending really should be what we do in real life and how we really feel/carry ourselves. Not just the masks we hide behind.

    Brilliant work.

    referring to meezan's comment above:

i think the video is beautifully done... i love the colors and lightning. also, the ending is perfect because it is real. we live in days in which we are guided -or better said, misguided- to believe in 'happy' endings. happy endings are great, but unfortunately are not quite true for everyone. which is why i thank you for going against the crowd and creating something different. good work, aziz.. i wish i could do something like that someday. keep it up!

This is simlpy amazing. I share the view this video conveys. If I understood it correctly, anyway. And thank god for ending it the way you did. You told the truth and not a fairytale. This is something the world needs more of!

Your story would have been great with basic 2D as well. So this combined with the great technical side makes this a truly amazing video.

And thank you for introducing me to Ghinzu - a great band indeed! Keep it up, Aziz!

Awesome work, man. Good character design, textures, lighting - the music went great with the first half of the film, the animation of the chair "receiving" the hero as he sat was good as well... bravo!

Do you really believe that we all live with a metaphorical mask? shielding the outsides world from our true emotions. or was that just to entertain?
none the less, it looked really professional, and i enjoyed enough to watch a couple more times.
  • Aziz K. plus 6 months ago
    Hey John.
Well some days, it seems like i agree with this and there are other days when I don't at all. So it's a come&go situation I think :)

I'm loving it. The video is really great, animations are smooth and pretty, but I didn't like that part where he throws his mask of in kinda laggy slo-mo. (2:04 - 2:12) IMO it could have been done a bit better :)
  • Aziz K. plus 6 months ago
Hey Valdemaras. I agree that part doesn't work that well, the short has its flaws. If only I had a bit more time to finish it...
