Why did the tarantula cross Carmel Valley road?
SEX!! yes, it's true, they are in search a of a mate. For seven long lonely years this male has been maturing, waiting for his chance to 'propagate the species'. As the summer days get long he makes his move. October is his chance. However, the road ahead is full of birds, coyotes, and cars. If he is lucky enough to survive the journey, he will have to deal with the female tarantula.
Female tarantulas, occasionally chomp on their suitors. To increase the odds of survival, male tarantulas have small barbs on their front legs that hold their mate's jaw open so she can't eat on them up. The big, brown spiders tend to take the path of least resistance as they search for a mate, preferring to wander along trails and even roads. That makes them relatively easy to find.
