Yet another new 24p version!

Shot over a couple of nights, taking the 5dmk2 out on the streets and getting shots of the inhabitants and visitors. No lighting, no grading. This is what came out of the camera image wise. All handheld and helped by using the Z-Finder from Zacuto to give the camera a proper viewfinder and improve stability.

All shot using one lens. A Nikon mount Zeiss ZF 50mm f1.4

Music is performed by Stacey Kent: You can't take that away from me.

Converted to 24p JES De-Interlacer

Thanks to Dennis Lennie and Teodor Stoyanov.

2 very good reasons! One, I don't own any Canon lenses. Two, you can get shallow DOF with manual iris lenses like Nikons in all light situations, not just low light here. The manual control over aperture on the Canon glass is non existent. The only way you can force the iris to stay wide open in video mode is to release the lens catch and have it half off!
  • Ron Coker plus 6 months ago
With all due respect I beg to differ, Philip. There are several techniques available to manage Canon Glass in any lighting situation. The best I find, Star Button x3 locking in Aperture, ASA, Shutter Speed, after first blanking the front lens element. Re toggle star button for a fresh set of options. The addition of a Vari ND filter will provide improved flexibility, finally arriving at the optimum setting, for the occasion.

The Vincent Laforte Canon supported video is probably the best clip to demonstrate the use of Canon Glass.

good info thanks...but there is nothing like having a manual aperture on the lens if you are coming from video cameras like me, it also means you can adjust the iris during a shot. Just want that 24p firmware and anything else. If anyone know how I can beta test please let me know!
  • Tracey Lee 6 months ago
I must agree with Philip here. There is no substitute for using manual lenses for DOF control. The workarounds are shabby at best. I have been trying them over and over...and I still go back to my manual Nikons for the 5D.
  • Paul Reynolds 6 months ago
My first love was the Nikon F3 still film camera. Shot with it for years. Oh how I loved that camera and wish I still had it. I purchased a DSLR Canon last year just because "everyone" else had one but, Holy crap! I miss my manual aperture ring. What was I thinking? Adaptor and Nikon lens sound good to me.
  • Felipe Tavares plus 3 months ago
I always shoot on Manual Mode instead of Program AE and I can do pretty much everything on the 5D. I can change aperture, shutter speed and ISO even while shooting.

Is it just my impression or you people had rather shoot videos on automatic mode instead of manual one?
  • Philip Bloom plus 3 months ago
Hi Felipe. When i shot this there was no manual mode. Hence the use of Nikon lens. Now with new firmware everything has changed and you have full manual control.
  •
  • Matt Scott 6 months ago
Canon lenses don't have manual aperture rings which are needed to gain rudimentary manual exposure control with that camera.

cheers mate. I just love that I can out out with this camera, one lens at night and get this stuff and not get hassled or anything...
  • Wayne Avanson plus 6 months ago
I know. It's a bit of a cracker. It's not actually much of a problem up here as it is in London, but still, nobody even thinks twice about it because of its form factor.

So Philip, after the last couple of weeks would you say 5d MK2 or GH1 is your favourite and why?

    Cheers, John.
  • Philip Bloom plus 6 months ago
now the gh1, when i get one, will live in my man bag. Shoots great stills and video. The 5dmk2 is superior image and low light but harder to use. Ideal world, you have both like me ;-) GH1 with image recognition tracking, optical stabilisation, full manual controls is a dream. Lets see if Canon up the ante with firmware fix. Low light on Canon is way better as you can see...
  • David Whalen plus 6 months ago
i had a hv30 on a extreme budget until i was hit by a car and my camera smashed. i want to buy a new one but am considering the gh1 instead of hv30. plan to use it for videos to help charities and to take lots of nature stills. do you think the gh1 will be a good replacement for the hv30 inspite of the lower bit rate. some of the videos will likely be on a cable station (ewtn) as 30 minutes shows in hd. just concerned about audio on gh1. if necessary a recording device will work. all together less then $2k. tx phillip. your work is kick ass! i just learned of you while researching this camera!

  • Scott Karlins plus 6 months ago
Wow! Amazing... Now, do I add this Canon to my kit, or trade my EX1/Letus... ;) The 25p is way nicer indeed. Do you use Compressor to create the final uploaded .mp4, or you still doing that in Quicktime? Been trying Compressor for my finals, but seems slower!
  • Philip Bloom plus 6 months ago
Cheers Scott. Keep them both!! 5dmk2 in no way can replace an ex1 and letus, yet! i edited in 30p, exported as a movie. Converted to 25p in compressor at highest settings pro res 422 and it worked a treat, even music stayed same speed. took 5 minutes on my macbook pro 17"
  • Scott Karlins plus 6 months ago
Thanks for the info Phil. Once you got the ProRes file, did you then use Compressor, or Quicktime export to get your final .mp4 file for uploading to Vimeo? I have been messing with Compressor for my finals, but it seems way slower then using Quicktime export.

    No drop frames? kingston 133x 32gb 20MB/sec. write , canon 5d mark II • 1920 x 1080 (16:9) up to 12 mins (Quicktime 1080p H.264; 38.6 Mbits/sec)
  • Philip Bloom plus 6 months ago
20mb/sec is a different form of measurement to 38.6Mbits a second. Let me get the official calculation and let you know! but 133x is the speed you need!

    Amazing Philip!!

Denver Riddle put together a chart showing the different sensor sizes and this tells a lot about low light capabilities:

    davidperryfilms.com/images/sensor_comparison_chart2.jpg

I found these stats at Panavision which are pretty close to what Denver put down for sensor sizes:

Stunning as are all of your videos!

Just out of curiosity, did you tell everyone to freeze for a few seconds or did they think that you were taking a picture (since the 5D doesn't have the appearance of a video camera)?
  • Philip Bloom plus 6 months ago
most thought I was taking a photo which is exactly what I wanted. but i get the same thing when I use a big camera. I say "pretend i am taking a photo!"

I know these cameras look great on the interenet.
What I would like to test is downloading it and playing it on a larger screen.
Phil, can you zip it up and send me the full HD file on you send it and I'll test in our our big screen.

Steve, I just got done playing the .mp4 download on my 1080p projector in my theatre on a 108" Severtson screen... It looks really nice. Even with this compressed file, it is stunning.
  • Wow, Now we need to test it on a theater screen. I still say the bucks are in the web, but to answer the naysayers.

Thought this may interest you. I shot a music video with the 5D MK II and presented it to an audience her in South Australia, for a Canon Demo Night in the Mercury Cinema where I work. I'm lucky enough to have access to a Sony Cinealta 4k Cinema Projector and to put it mildly, people (and I) were blown away. We were able to compress to MPG2 and feed in to the projector at full res HD, which then upscales to 4k. I'll be uploading the video in HD to Vimeo in the next few days....

seriously though, i'm not sure if my "hey, can I film you?" is as effective as I would like it to be

what your process for evoking a natural shot?
  • Philip Bloom plus 6 months ago
i just make them feel relaxed, smile and don't take very long!
  •
  • Martin Zahuta 6 months ago
Philip, amazing as always! Love the colors, love the editing.

The only thing that bothers me a little is the rolling shutter.
  • Philip Bloom plus 6 months ago
there is some...if you are talking about the odd looking first three shots, that is smoothcam done for effect. but any hand held with this camera is susceptible to rolling shutter

If you hadn't have said this was shot from the 5DM2 I would have thought this was straight from the EX3!

How are you finding the Z-Finder? I'm thinking of getting one for my D90 because (as you know) focusing is a pain! Does this make a great deal of difference or do I have to buy some Philip Bloom experience from ebay ;-)

    Nice shooting once again :)
  • Philip Bloom plus 6 months ago
yeah it's great. helps a lot, but shows that the lcd isn't that high resolution compared to say the ex1 or 3...

Philip: Why convert to 25p, for a more filmatic look? Always thought 30p looked smoother. Also, how much that Z-Finder Cost? Easy to import/edit in final cut?
    Thanks!
  • Philip Bloom plus 6 months ago
30p is smoother. So is interlaced. But I have always liked the more film like motion! Z-finder is NOT cheap. almost $4000 but makes using the camera handheld possible. Without it, it is horrible. Pain in butt to edit. I convert everything to XDCAM EX 35mbps 30p in MPEG STREAMCLIP as editing native H264 needs a 128 core Mac Pro with 256gb of RAM. Sort of...well it's v difficult on a laptop
  • astute 6 months ago
I think there is a 0 too much in your price there mate ;)
  • Sean Fitzroy 5 months ago
Philip, beautiful stuff. Just wondering why you convert to XDCAM EX 35mbs and not ProRes? ProRes should be easier on your processor (although harder on your hard drive).

Philip, you are truely the master of capturing the essence of the street and it's inhabitants.

I mean, what do you say to people, "Hey, stranger, mind looking into my camera for a bit?"?

I always struggle with this and you seem so good at capturing it.

Fantastic, the depth of field is beautiful, that's the one thing I hate about all the digital HDV cameras I've used, the depth of field is so wide, if you want just a little bit of blur on a closeup, you have to stand back like 20 meters and zoom all the way in. I'd love to shoot something using a camera with a lens like this.

  • Hi Philip....Congratulations on your work with the canon.Really nice images.I still don´t know if I´m getting one because of the 30 fps and the obvious problems of syncing sound if you capture it on camera and convert to 25 fps, or the GH1. What I wouldn´t like to do would be to buy the GH1 and seeing that I couldn´t make nice videos to broadcast with it...What is your advice on that?
I saw your comment further up and noticed that you convert your footage to XDCAM. Have you ever tried to convert it with the DVCPRO HD codec on mpeg streamclip...It doesn´t take long and when I´m on the road I manage to edit very easily with my MacbookPro 4gb RAM and 320 HD.
    Thank you

    B-E-A-utiful.
Cool idea with stabilizing the heads instead of the background. Reminded me of those running shots in the last Guy Richie flick. Hint: Use the track point stabilization in After Effects instead of SmoothCam, because SmoothCam tracks many many points instead of just two or three, so it wobbles a bit.
Anyways, great colors and I can't see the 30p-25p change at all. Good work man!

Absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing this - really makes me miss the city!

Just curious - is there a way to keep the depth of field down in Canon lenses when shooting with the Mark II?

Again, so incredibly beautiful. Makes me happy to be alive!
  • Philip Bloom plus 6 months ago
apparently there is a convoluted way which involves holding your hand in front of the lens then pressing lock and then other things...vincent laforet explains it. personally i like having manual aperture on front of camera, coming from a video camera background
  • astute 6 months ago
Philip, the trick is to either shine light into the lens using a flash light or holding for example your mobile phone screen in front of it.
Or, to cover it up with your lens cap, or hand to get the desired ISO/Shutterspeed combo.
  • Philip Bloom plus 6 months ago
that sounds so funny! but thanks, i have just bought a shift tilt canon lens so will need to learn that track, love the idea of having to shine a light in the lens to trick it. FIRMWARE PLEASE CANON!!!
