Your style is very subtle but distinct.

Letting the film burn off at the end was a great choice.
  • Thanks I hope I can cultivate that style even more in my last year of grad school.

I love the colors, i dont know if its just because of the film or how you color corrected it.
  • It's a bit of both, mostly color correction since I did an unsupervised transfer without a colorist during telecine. But the new Vision 3 stock and the 250D are extremely beautiful. The color fidelity is unreal and I think it surpasses all the previous stocks, especially when you compare the Vision 2 and Vision 3 500T. I mean all film is good...it just looks different, you have to pick the right stock that will suite your story, mood and theme. So in many respects it is the stock, but a LOT of post work was done as well. I think it takes both, without one, the other would suffer.

Well great job, Im stuck with video for now. haha its cheaper and faster. But aesthetically, there is no match to film, still.

    ps.

your link above is including the parenthesis and not directly linking to your site. But cool site
  • thanks for the heads up! my regular blog is karenabad.tumblr.com but that one is just restricted to progress on my thesis films :-)

    wow!! Awesome!
  • These new cuts look way better huh. I think I'll revisit this in a year before I turn it in for my final thesis presentation and see if I can fine tune it some more.

Great job and thanks again bdb, love you so much and miss you.
  • Jack Creswick 5 months ago
Doesn't film look great!! Good grading too. It's always instructive to revisit after a year or so; I think you'll probably want to tighten up some of the walkout/walkin cuts and personally, I'd like to see a few more frames on the head of the balloon-release shot. Good work Karen.
  • Agreed. Unfortunately, there's no more footage to work with...due to extenuating circumstances that I won't go into that occurred during our shoots. Let's just say were were EXTREMELY lucky to get what we did. The most difficult thing about tightening shots is not having extra footage to fill the "tightened up" parts with. Since we shot with film it's far too expensive to just..go out and shoot pick ups. I have 5 more films to make in Super 16mm and 35mm so no more monies. However, maybe I can rearrange some stuff. Thanks so much for your feedback Jack :-)

Another great job, of course! but I'd also like to compliment your ice cream man selection--those big watermelon popsicles are marvelous.
  • Haha...believe it or not, the ice cream packaging/newspaper etc was design from scratch so that we wouldn't infringe on any copyright. ;-) Rocket Blast (watermelon!) I remember Matt and Athena kinda freaked because the Popsicles had black dots in them (supposed to replicate seeds in a watermelon) haha.

i read your blog; usually if i see a video that you've posted i'll just play it before i read what you've written about it. bss is also my favorite band of all time, so i was interested to hear what it sounded like. i seriously watched the whole thing thinking that guy looked familiar, and that the whole idea would be something you liked. i felt real silly after, then amazed.

loved it! great camera moves and great color grading. Loved the fixie, tattoos, interiors as well as the balloons; well done.

if you don't mind my asking but what was your budget like for film and processing? Thanks for sharing
  • Thanks Chad. Well..I'm working on my thesis for grad school which is comprised of 5 short films on Super 16mm, 35mm, and HD...and my start off budget is around 13grand...

For this film, I didn't break a grand, just a couple hundred. ;-) It's hard for me to figure in processing and film because I pay for my class, and it comes with an allotment of film. All I know is, I'm saving hundreds of thousands of dollars by doing it through grad school.
