I am curious... do you not think racism can happen in person? How do you account for all the people who have actually enacted slavery and genocides related to colonizing the Americas for the last 500+ years, or all the people who enforce horrible labour conditions, in person?

President Andrew Jackson bragged about keeping scalps from indigenous people he killed himself; he didn't just send amorphous soldiers to kill ambiguous people in vague places. That doesn't look like detachment to me; it looks like somebody grew up with a white supremacist viewpoint and had access to military power.

I do agree that it's easier to stay in denial when you have more distance, but bringing the action up close doesn't improve anything unless you actually unpack it once you're face to face with it.
