147. First video shot with my D90 - Strupload
5 months ago
<3 June 30, 2009 my brand new D90 arrived at work. I had to buy it for my friends' wedding shoot I have to do in August. My dearly departed d50 couldn't cut it. This video was taken immediately after I took the camera out of the box. No post production color correction, just strupload.

Lot of out of focus as I learn about all the funny little buttons. I can't wait to play with my camera after work!

This feels like a big step up from my poor broken d50 (RIP).

Weird, Firefox 3.5 made this video really choppy. Safari 4.0 says hello.
Anyway, fun video. I'm tempted to invest in a Canon Rebel T1i... I'm not sure, but does the D90 have both manual and auto focus for video? (really silly question)...
  • Just manual for video.
    Don't worry, that's not a silly questions.

    What's a hypotenuse?

Okay, joking, I know what that is...

I'm convinced I should get a T1i now. UGH. Dear Grad School. Pay for yourself. Love, Tommy

i recently got a t1i, i like it, but it is rather small and light, plasticy. the lcd is amazing, button layout a little lame, video is great. you can manual and auto focus the video though the autofocus is a little lame as it also adjusts exposure, ... so it seems fine for video were your not moving around much or changing focus constantly. it also has hdmi on it for convenient hdtv viewing, though its mini hdmi which can be hard to find.
  • Thanks for the input about the T1i :-)

I totally love girth for cameras. haha

I've been debating between this and the Canon t1i. I'm leaning towards the t1i because of how poor the audio is on the d90. how do you like it?

More importantly, can I play with it tomorrow?
  • I'm a nikon girl...so i have a bunch of lenses and other stuff that are Nikon, it would be hard for me to make the switch (as much as I wanted the 5dmii) but I've been happy with it in the 5 min i played with it. and of course you can play with it tomorrow. ! Wanna shoot something?
  • sean leonard 5 months ago
Yeah im going back and forth between the t1i and the d90 too, tell me how it goes!
  • It really depends what you are using the camera for. If you want a dSLR that you are serious about taking photographs with, then a d90 is a great pick. If you care more about the video options, Canon might be a better alternative for you. I love Nikon optics a lot and this camera will predominately be used for still photography, hence a good part of the decision.
  • sean leonard 5 months ago
Personally i'm more interested in the video option. Im really just getting real photography so i think i would be happy with the canon. Thank you so much for your input! :)
  • Yeah the Canon is probably your best bet. :-)

oooooooooooooooooo my dream baby. im still making due with my d60 until i can afford to replace her!!
  • If my d50 wasn't broken for the last 2 years, I'd still be using it all the time and I honestly wouldn't have purchased this yet.

I love taking videos with my D90. You have to learn to work with the A/E lock and avoiding rolling shutter but as soon as you get used to it you will love it.

My D90 is a video camera with the functionality to take stills.
  • hahaa

My D90 is an incredible dSLR photography camera with the perks of video capabilities.

How are people doing sound with this camera?
  • Hmm apparently it sucks with it. But I think if you're thinking about shooting anything serious with this as far as video, you should probably consider a flash recorder.

    Hi
It seems more people are shooting on stills cams. Was this shot at 30fps?
  • 24fps :-)

You can set it up so it isn't changing exposure all the time by holding down the AE lock button (on back of camera) - even better you can go into the menu and set it up so that when you hit the button it just locks the exposure so you don't have to hold it down. Have fun. I love the camera.
  • hhaha it took me a bit to figure that out but now so good! love it to cam buddies!

This camera is awesome. I've been a Canon dude for a long while but the more I play around with Nikon DSLR's the more enticing they seem. At least at the sub- $2000 level Canon's feel so plastic and light comparatively. Also the zoom and focus rings on a lot of Canon's feel so flimsy to me compared to their Nikon counterparts. Again this is in the sub professional price range of under $2K.

Great purchase Karen! It's pretty cool that all these DSLRs are starting to incorporate video. So fun to play with!

With those who like shooting stills for leisure and want video, I personally like the GH1. Yes, I know it's a micro 4/3rds camera and not a DSLR, but it's still pretty awesome and can hold it's own. I've had mine for about a week and a half, and I love it! Just a consideration fellow vimeo-ers. =)

Anyway, pretty cool to see you guys sorta at work...haha. =P

    fun stuff Karen!

i am just going to chime in here, if people are concerned with the price of the D90, go for the D5000. Same sensor, you can put the same glass on it, and it is just as fun!
  • My beef with the D500 is that the interface sucks. The menu above isn't there anymore because you're supposed to use the screen. Also I don't know how I feel about that screen, albeit convenient, I'm sure I'd snap and break that thing after a week.

But it's definitely cheaper than the D90 and lighter and such. I like the girth of the D90.

I spent so much time researching and comparing the two before I bought mine because it seemed to make sense since the D5000 was cheaper, but they didn't exactly make things that much better than the D90.
  • Courtney Hunt 2 months ago
I'm in the same struggle. I cannot decide on the D5000 or D90 -- My birthday 18th birthday is tomorrow and I have to make a decision. Yikes.

So you think the D90 is a definite better buy?
  • If you want to shoot a lot of video...save that money and just get the Canon 7D.

    :-)

But if you want to take more photos than video, the D90 over the D5000, personally, especially for the functionality of the info screen on the top. With the D5000, they eliminate that and you have to look at it through the LCD.

But I recommend going to a store and seeing which handles better for you personally. :-)
