Grande Cheese testimonial shot in Brooklyn New York in May 2009. We used the Canon 5D Mark 2 for this shoot. Tosh Omori was the DP and I produced and edited.

You did post sync sound from a different camera? How did you match it up? 5d shoots 30.00fps and any other camera would shoot 29.97fps right?
  • Jon Carr plus 4 months ago
Matching up was pretty easy. I did a hand clap in the frame that gave me an audio spike and a visual reference on my editing timeline. I set the DVX audio to 99.9% speed and synced up the clap and deleted the 5D audio. I then linked the DVX audio to the footage in my timeline and was good to go. It worked great. I hear good things about plural eyes software as well. It does this for you automatically.

Would you mind describing your lighting setup for the interview? It looked fantastic!
  • Jon Carr plus 4 months ago
I think we did standard three point lighting. Key to the left, bounce on the right, and we used the sun that was coming in the door for the hair. We had a full Arri Kit and Diva 400 and I believe we used tungsten bulbs to provide some color contrast to the heavy daylight coming in and this gave us separation. We also used this technique in the dolly move at the end of the video. Glad you liked.

Great Stuff Jon. I was just talking about the 5DM2 with a friend and I'm having trouble getting over the whole 30P thing. Your work sure makes me forget about that.

Are you doing anything with the shutter speed in this or any of your other videos? Some of them seem to have a kind of staccato look to them at times but I'm not sure if it was shot that way or if that is just a Vimeo thing.

    Great work. I'm a fan.

Thanks Dan. I really wish this camera had 24p. I tried to convert these and wasn't happy with the results. We shot this video before the firmware update so it was a little difficult to control the camera and a few shots are on the auto settings. When we had time, we targeted 1/60 on shutter and a few shots, like the pizza making are at 1/100 so I could do some slow motion in post. I think some of what you may be seeing is when Vimeo converts the 5D videos to 24p for playback. Downoad the full size quicktime and let me know. It should be better.

I find if you stick to 1/50 or 1/60 with this camera and get the 180 shutter, the "video look" is minimized and it is acceptable. Also keep in mind that the majority of people won't even notice the difference between 24 and 30.

    Hey Jon!

    Great Work!

What lenses did you use on this one?
  • Jon Carr plus 4 months ago
We used Nikon lenses. I believe on this video we went with the 17-35 2.8 for the wide shots. A few shots with a 50 1.8 and an 85 1.4 for the interviews.

Great work, your footage is impressive. Why didn't you have success converting to 24p? I thought this was a common thing to do, especially with the 5D.
  • Jon Carr plus 3 months ago
Thanks for watching. I got a lot of ghosting when I tried the conversion and wasn't happy with the result so I stayed with 30.
