It seems to have richer colors. And the dof seems better.
  • Mike Kobal plus 4 months ago
yup. the 5D2 is better, no doubt, but with a little grading and tweaking the GH1 is pretty damn good

  • Positive Pictures plus 4 months ago
    well... THANKS !!!
do you have lenses of f1.8 or around that... of both.
Can't wait to see one of this kind of test.

thanks for this one, I can clearly see a difference in the DOF even @f4.
  • Mike Kobal plus 4 months ago
u r welcome, Positive. waiting for the lens adapter, got it on ebay - did not arrive yet, planning to use the 50mm 1.4 which should be sweet
  • Positive Pictures plus 4 months ago
    yess !!

in fact my heavy XH-A1 does the job, but I need something with again more DOF sometimes so... The G1 have a pretty okay image stabiliser and so... cheaper than good camcorder.
I'll wait, but I guess if nothing comes out better that that, this is what I'll get for sure.

It's just that I need to film around 5 to 6 hours and with the G1 or 5D... that's a lot of memory card...

Could be nice if we have an option of shooting RAW or mpeg (or better again H.264)... ;) - like RAW or jpeg for pictures.
  • Mike Kobal plus 4 months ago
exactly, I like the depth of field too on the GH1, great to get everything in focus when it is needed, the codec is a real pain, takes forever to trans code to prores422
  •
  • Don´t transcode to prores...it takes forever and messes up FCP. Do log and transfer to DVCPROHD...It´s really fab.
  • Mike Kobal plus 4 months ago
alright! thanks for the tip, Augusto. will try that.
  • Trankilstef 4 months ago
Augusto, what software do you use to transfer to DVCPROHD? I downloaded AVC2P2 software, but it doesn't recognize my GH1 footage as a panasonic footage!
    What's the problem with that?
  • I use FCP in log and transfer. You choose as codec DVCPROHD.
  • Trankilstef 4 months ago
Damn! I don't edit on FCP cause I'm not on Mac ( for the moment )... Thanx for the info...

Canon is better in low light condition. I do not know but Panasoic was so much clear means much focused, maybe Canon was not properly focused. Canon gives little bluish tone, Panasonic was natural.

If we compare price than Pansonic is winner, but I tink still pictures would be really stunning from Canon. And Canon has more pixel in still pictures.

But Panasonic is giving good fight with Canon, maybe Canon will drop the price. But nothing wrong if we buy Panasonic.
  • Mike Kobal plus 4 months ago
Hey Kaushik, what you are seeing is deceptive. the GH1 over sharpens, I have to see if there is a way to turn that down, it looks good at first but messes up the data in case you want to grade it later.
  • The reason of the difference from canon to the panasonic lens is because the canon lens has more aperture than the panasonic. So at 28mm both lenses, the faster lens has shallower depth of field. The canon is more "open" at 28mm considering that both do 28 but at different apertures. The higher aperture (lower f) less depth of field for the same focal distance.
  • Kaushik 4 months ago
Thanks, if we consider video part with price than Panasonic is winner, but in still feature Canon would be better, it would have been good if someone take pictures of both and than make slideshow than we can see the result, I am not sure but that would be great!
  • Kaushik 4 months ago
And Mike, I found you are lucky, you have both camera. Is it possible that you can show both video in single screen, and not same video but take another with daylight and low light. If it possible that would be good and put some JPEG images 1920x1080, and than make slideshow, lets see how it looks.
  • Mike Kobal plus 4 months ago
I wish I had time for all that!
  • Kaushik 4 months ago
Nevermind, understood, thanks for this clip though.

great test Mike. I found it most helpful.

good to hear it was helpful.

thanks for making that comparison. I like the 5d . how good is it when burning to a avchd disk on blu-ray since it records at close to 50 mbs a seconds and you can only get about half of its data without the disks stuttering?
  • Mike Kobal plus 4 months ago
    craig, I don't have a TV!

  • Davi Santaella plus 4 months ago
Great test, Mike. Canon looks a lot better.
  • Mike Kobal plus 4 months ago
Thanks Davi. I like the GH1, depends on how one uses it.

You can see the Moire in the upper bricks on the 5D M II with large streaks and bands. However the IQ based on compression smokes the GH1 in all respects. Too bad they could have added at least 24mbits to the GH1.
  • Mike Kobal plus 4 months ago
hopefully they will fix that in a firmware update. 17mbits is kind of low, but I can live with it in 720p

  • Ted Pemberton 4 months ago
    This is EXCELLENT.

The 5D is has better DOF and low-light performance, the GH1 is sharper and more digital-looking.

I choose the 5D. I wonder if Canon programmed in that film-like unsharpness? If one could switch on and off that kind of processing, the 5D would be the end-all option.
  • Mike Kobal plus 4 months ago
sharpening is turned off on the 5D2. not on the GH1. the sensor is 1/2 of the Canon's. with the same lens, you will get the same look although double the magnification. the 50mm on the canon will be 100mm on the gh1.

I just loaded both of these clips in to a Beyonwiz DP-P2 PVR connected (via HDMI) to a Panasonic 50" PZ850 series Plasma, and viewed @ 2metres.

Canon 5D2 - nothing to report, asbsolutely rock solid, no artifacts any where in the picture - looks like a DSLR still shot.

Panasonic GH1... oh boy.. where do I start...
GH1: 0:0 to 0:12 - very noticeable sharpening contours in the sky - this is the low light 'mud' effect every one is talking about. Lots, and I mean lots, of dancing block artifacts in the sky. It doesnt' look good at all.

Lots of dancing blocks in the red areas of the Arizona can at both infinity and close focus.

The GH1 might be ok for viewing on small monitors, but it is bound to look very bad on a 100" projector screen.
  • Mike Kobal plus 4 months ago
makes me feel better not to have a 100" monitor.
  • PKSellers 3 months ago
I have a 110 inch projector screen with blueRay :D

I wish you knew how this test is influencing my choice towards the 5D, Thanks for doing that. I was looking for something within all the parameters you set up. This is a great comparison, other than Frame rates did you see any other plus sides to the GH1?
  • Mike Kobal plus 4 months ago
thanks Nathan. the frame rate was the main reason for me to get it. full manual control swivel lcd, the little camera just kicks a**, I really like it. I hope pany will give us a fimware ugrade and change the codec from 17 to 25 mbps, but then again, I don't have a 100" tv to watch for pixels problems :-)

Im no expert by a long shot but just by eye I feel that this one is "better". The tone and sharpness of the cloud shot and the depth of field in the second shot look better from the canon. I think.
  •
  • Tameside 4 months ago
Yes, but try af'ing or hand-holding or even moving the Canon, then you will realise! is everything always shot from a tripod? check Mikes new clip, could he do that with the Canon? get things into perspective.

Wonderful comparisons, Mike! Thanks a million!

Could you please compare a panning shot of both the 5D Mk2 and the GH1? Anything as subject, even just a wall. :)
  • Mike Kobal plus 4 months ago
panning very slow looks fine, panning fast does not. both cameras are better then the D90 when it comes to panning.

canon 5d looks a whole lot better to me. just about every clip that i've seen uploaded to vimeo from the 5d looks so smooth. the gh1 realy proves the codek is inferior thus making it a far inferior cam to the canon.

In the hands of the wright person you can get some amazing things from the gh1 but in the hands of lest skilled people the 5d still shines.
  • Mike Kobal plus 4 months ago
experimenting with transcoding, but it is frustrating the bitrate is too low and the compression too high on the gh1
  •
  • Brad McGiveron plus 4 months ago
    thanks for the test Mike

I just got a GH1 to go along with my 5D and I must say if the two cameras could be one it would be great. They are not, and so far the 5D is a clear winner until the GH1 codec gets sorted. Plus the stills area is a no contest.

there is something very nice about the GH1 though and its feel and control, just for me the final image is what matters and its not quite there yet.
  •
  • Lakeeba coleman plus 4 months ago
Mike, do you think the trade off of having 24p is worth the massive compression and image hit of the gh1 in comparison to the canon 5d?
  •
  • PKSellers 3 months ago
5d M2 FTW! YOu should do a movement test. Take some shots with a lot of movement in them and compare at different frame rates.

heres a wierd idea try the pentax k-7 it will hold up to grading

thanks for the comparison... both cameras look great when you consider the price difference on these suckers...
