Going back(wards) to the tides.

By Matthew Brown
Music by Hammock
Voiceover by Maya Angelou

I'm currently trying to find funding for a new project about seeing the world through the eyes of an autistic 9-year-old girl as she watches her family rip apart because of her disability. It's a very hard-hitting topic for me and a lot of other people, and I hope to present it with a decent budget. We are planning to shoot this Thanksgiving season, and anything would help! My paypal account is writingmatthew@hotmail.com If you can loan equipment, locations, props, etc, that would be much appreciated, too! Thank you!

also another reminder that i really need to get out and explore my adopted home state more, especially the olympic peninsula.

OMG!! Matthew, you're a genius! The color grading is all by Vegas or did you used some other plug-in? For the soften effect did you put something in front of the camera or is created in post? Anyway, great video, thanks for sharing it with us!

once again, a beautiful match of images with narrative, music ~ where's this, matthew?

Hello! Sorry for the late reply. Thank you for the kind words! It was shot on the northern coast of Washington State.

  • Matthew,
I love it very much but I waited to whole piece to hear, "Good Morning" and see your new day morning shots and I felt a little let down. You know you could have also done this like you GAY=Sin and intercut some of Barack's speach of hope, JFK's speach, a new frontier. Another route would have been a mix of inagural poet's like the Maya one you used, including Robert Frost (they all tend to talk of new beginnings).

This poem is very personal to me, and I think it can definitely stand on it's own. I am not attracted to putting speeches by the "big dogs". I also don't like the way she says "good morning". I think it's the one moment in the whole poem where I get pulled out, so I had the speech fade into the fog with the children's voices and everything else as if it's just another memory.
  • Understood, it's your piece.
  • Matthew Brown plus 3 months ago
Hehe, I did almost put the "good morning" part of the speech in, but it just kept not feeling right only because of the tone of her voice. Hopefully I'll have my first narrative short film up in the next couple of weeks. It's not going to be anything special, but I may as well post it to vimeo.
Thanks for checking it out, Steve! Always appreciated!

Matthew, you seem you really like voiceovers combined with music, don't you, haha :D No, seriously, I have to agree with Steve (above me:) in some ways - the similarity with Gay=Sin is maybe too obvious (especially in audio) for such a creative guy like you ;). But on the other hand, your backwards shots are just unbelievably stunning and I love them since your Bloom. For me - thumbs up!
  • Matthew Brown plus 3 months ago
Hehe, yeah I've been very busy doing other projects, and this was just a last minute, rushed thing, hehe, so
I didn't have much time to brainstorm a good concept. Thanks for taking the time to watch it! :)

I loved this video, Matt. It's so pure and so moving. What camera are you using again? This is exactly what I needed on a Monday morning. Everything looks better now, today. Bravo, my friend!

Thank you! I use the Canon HV30.

Beautiful and very life affirming. It had a very human, redemptive quality to it. Like saying we can go back and right what we've made wrong. Putting the Maya voice over was perfect. Thanks Matthew!

Dude, a new video from you is always exciting for me, and you rocked it again. So natural, so organic, so atmospheric. And so precise yet gentle and subtle at the same time. Love the way the voice-over slowly syncs in with the imagery. Truely captivating. I could sit and watch your videos for hours. Man, this is what the internet is all about!!!!

Matt it was lovely. It really made me want to be your friend so I can go on one of your camping trips :)

The feet coming out of the sand and water was a great shot and looked fantastic moving backwards. I felt like I was there filming it with you!

I am always intriqued when video is reversed. I don't know what it is. I guess it equates to when we see something from a different angle. Or, perhaps, it's because there's something and mysterious and haunting about it. You capture the haunting at 00:56. I keep rewatching that moment.

Edit: We all have our interpretations of poems. I feel like this one tells us to go back to the beginning. Maybe there's something we missed and, if uncoveres, can be corrected and allow us to move forward again. WOW! I love this!!

    Awesome stuff, as usual!
  • Matthew Brown plus 3 months ago
Thank you so much man! It seems people are not really into reverse clips, but I find it to be something deeper than a "gimmick" as some people would put it. It's much different.

wow...without interruption i watched this and loved it. great music. did you shoot on a canon 5dmk2? just a guess, on the super close up shots, what lens did you use?
  • Matthew Brown plus 3 months ago
Hehe, I wish I shot it on the 5dmk2! It was shot on the Canon HV30 and I didn't have a lens adapter. It was just the naked camera. Thank you so much for the kind words!!

Photographically masterful. I am not totally sold on the backwards theme, but there are times when the imagery is astonishing.

So, I'll have to try it!

  • Matthew Brown plus 3 months ago
Thank you man! I'm afraid the short film will be in rough form due to being robbed a couple weeks ago, so I'll have to upload it as is. :( I'm really looking forward to my next short film, though. Maybe I'll actually be able to edit it all the way through this time, hehe.

Thank you again for the very nice words!

Matthew, I saw this video on ScenicBoys and it is truly inspiring and got to me. It made me sob as I've watched it numerous times in a row. It hit me somewhere - this shocked me as I haven't been to that place in a while. Your ability to tag one's emotion is priceless so please keep sharing. Brilliant. Chris

Thank you very much, Chris! It's always great to go on caping trips with the Scenic Boys, and this time is was just the most beautiful camping place I've ever been to. I hope you are able to go back soon! I hope all is well, and thank you for the very kind message! -Matt
