  • Great job! I don't know if this is a dumb question or not but did you bend that quarter? How?
  • Charlie McCarthy plus 2 years ago
    No, it was flat.

The slow-mo captured the illusion caused by the spinning.
  • I am amazed that the illusion that I did as a child with a pencil :P, is captured in the same way with a quarter here. I bow down to your greatness, Charlie.

Thanks Charlie, it works great on the xbox360/PS3 now! When you get Vegas Pro 8 you will be able to export at h.264/mp4 too, so that adds AppleTV compatibility too!

This trips me out. I refuse to believe the quarter was not bent.

    Stupid optical illuisions.

Charlie some how you were bending the laws time and space in this video. Awesome.

Speaking of inspiration I have tried the morning walk twice but both times I didn't have my wide angle so it was too close but I'll post mine when I do another one. I love those.

oO! The not bent bending coin is amazing!
  • Charlie McCarthy plus 2 years ago
Thanks, I knew it would look bent but it actually came out better than I had hoped.
  • Matt Taylor 2 years ago
You knew it would look that way before-hand?!?

Where did you get your special powers?
  • Charlie McCarthy plus 2 years ago
I tried it with a plate before but it was not as twisted.

I just want to know where you find your music. It seems that without fail you always select the right music with your clips -- or do you film already having music in mind?
  • Charlie McCarthy plus 2 years ago
I rarely have the music picked out before editing. I do spends lots of time finding the right track before I put something together.
I am actually starting to put a video together about my whole process and music selection is part of it.
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru plus 2 years ago
It's nice to be able to pick the music you want. I can only pick music from about 60 albums overall (most of them crappy), because these are the only ones under the CC-BY license (which is what I license my videos under too).

Wow. That distortion is bizarre. I'm guessing it's because each frame is being created line by line and the coin has moved as it has been scanned from top to bottom.

I'm trying the same thing at home (I had to see for myself) and I must say that it is really really cool.

My clip is not finish but I'm wondering ... how did you get rid of the interlace effect.
  • Charlie McCarthy plus 2 years ago
I used Sony Vegas to edit with these project settings:

    eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/11/09/exporting-with-vegas-for-vimeo-hd/

I also disabled resampling under the clip properties.

Thank you again Charlie to open the way (for me at least)

I should have known better to think you did a simple video of a quarter - WOW!

Nice! I added the tags "rolling shutter artefact" as this is the best example of it I have seen so far ;-)

This is a perfect example of something I was reading this morning on a 'take one subject and make it interesting' theme. I think its something they teach in college for photography. I've never seen a simple coin look so interesting (or bendy!)

    scary great,

do you have reasoning behind not using a tripod?

its called CMOS skew.... its a CMOS camera and does not capture the entire frame 24/30 times a sec. It scans the frame top to bottom really fast.... but not fast enough for fast moving objects like this coin.

You, sir, deserve to win a Weisscam high-speed camera two years after the fact. Something so ordinary captured this way really makes you stop and think.

I wonder what other interesting things like that I might be taking for granted every day? I know it sounds clichè but it's what I'm thinking. I'm going to spin a coin and blink really fast to see what happens. No, really.
  • Charlie McCarthy plus 13 days ago
    Thanks, Craig :)
