A View of Japan was the first film I made with my Sony DVD201E camera.

The video footage was shot in 4:3 Standard Definition PAL. The stills were also taken using the DVD201E. Post-processing was performed using Premiere Elements 3.

We were lucky enough to be able to spend 25 days in Japan – however, during that time it rained for all but 3 of those days as you will see from the footage. A typhoon hit Tokyo the evening we arrived and another one passed through the city of Kanazawa while we were there two weeks later. A few days after that, when we were in the far south in Hiroshima, a severe earthquake occurred in Niigata prefecture which is about 250 kilometers north of Tokyo.

This was the second time that Marilyn and I had visited Japan and this experience allowed us to travel quite widely. In broad terms our trip covered Tokyo, Nikko, Kamakura, Lake Ashi, Sendai, Matsushima Bay, Takayama, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Mia Jima Island. The trip concluded back in Tokyo. We travelled on the high-speed Shinkansen network when we had to go long distances and we used local trains and buses when we were sightseeing.

The music is played on a Japanese string instrument called a shimasen.

I would really like to go to japan :(.
great film, and a great contrast between the old temples and the city shots.

Hi Gerardo -- as I said to Loonachic in a private conversation a few days ago, Japan is a wonderful place. Firstly, it's very safe; secondly, the contrast between the old and the new is unbelievable -- often a temple or castle a thousand years old will be standing 100 meters away from something so futuristic it looks like it's out of the 22nd century. Finally, it's very easy to get around in Japan -- the rail network is fabulous and even if you don't speak any Japanese there's enough English (and English speakers) to help you figure things out.

Thank you for watching; I'm pleased that you enjoyed the film. Save your money and go to Japan!

Great! Some really nice camera work -- very smooth. Some of the scenes look direct from the NHK (Japan's national channel) archives.

    G'day!

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to watch and for your most generous commentary!
And secondly, thank you for adding my film to the Japan Channel. My wife and I have been fortunate enough to visit Japan twice and we'd be back there in a flash if we had the chance -- there's so much to see and it's a marvelously safe place to visit.

    Kindest regards,
    Arnold

Hi Arnold. Thanks for the wonderful video of your trip to Japan! I'll be going to Kyoto and Tokyo, visiting Himeji and Nikko as sidetrips. I'll be sure to let you know when I post the first videos!

    Hi Alex.

Firstly, thank you for your kind remarks about my film. Secondly, you will love Japan -- there's so much to see (and photograph). Marilyn and I went to Himeji castle on our first trip -- it is an absolute marvel and one of only a few castles that are essentially "original". A great many Japanese castles have been destroyed by fire over the centuries -- and this makes Himeji particularly special because it is in-tact. Nikko is also a must-see.

Make sure you allocate plenty of time for Kyoto. It is one of the wonders of the world. It's a big place, with lots to see, and the attractions are spread out over a wide area. I recommend that you squeeze in a trip to the bamboo forest just outside of Kyoto (it's easy to get there by local train from the Kyoto JR station).

Are you going to Hiroshima and Mia Jima Island to see the famous floating tori?

    How soon before you go?

I'm looking forward to seeing your film!

    Safe travels and kindest regards,
    Arnold

    Hello Arnold!

Actually, this is my third time in Japan, third time in Tokyo and first time in Kyoto. The itinerary is only one week and we're going to be doing a whirlwind tour of Kyoto before we use the bullet train and head to Tokyo. All in all, we'll be there for 3 1/2 days, with the rest spent in Tokyo. This will be my girlfriend's first time in Asia.

I'm looking forward to Kyoto and Himeji! I was going to settle with Nijo castle, but I heard that Himeji was breathtaking!

I am also seeing a friend in Tokyo and will be celebrating his birthday with a BBQ, then to a karaoke-kan in Shibuya.

We're leaving on the 17th on a red eye flight... but it's with a good airline (Asiana) so I'm looking forward to the great service.

Sorry if this seemed hurried - I'm responding while working a little overtime haha. Thanks for the greetings and happy travels!

Make sure you see the Golden temple in Kyoto. I'm already looking forward to the resulting film :-)

Have a safe and enjoyable trip.

    Kindest regards,
    Arnold

Hello Arnold! We just came back from Japan and we had a wonderful time! Unfortunately, we also did a bunch of video blogs on our Vimeo accounts (both mine and my girlfriend's) so our accounts are somewhat locked until Monday. Also, our footage was shot in all HD so even when we downscale the clips to normal size, somehow it still doesn't fit the maximum limits that Vimeo allows.

In the meantime, we're playing around with my version of all our footage, which is a highly condensed version of all the footage we took - we got about close to 6 hours of footage, which we're planning to make a DVD out of kinda like a "Travel Tips" DVD we're keeping for ourselves and sending to my girlfriend's grandmother.

But I'll spare you the technical details for later, but we'll let you know when the finished product is finally up on here!
