Boids 2: Additive Blending
Edit: I'm having issues getting VirtualDub to produce a video of decent quality that isn't 800mb+ - anyone able to recommend any codecs? DivX complains if I try using that.
Description: After some reading about Additive Blending in Robert Hodgin's tutorials (link below), I decided this would be a nice project to 'beautify', given the flocking behaviour tends toward little 'nodules' (especially once you tweek the boid rules to form little local clusters).
I added the ability to suddenly 'repel' boids away from a goal, rather than toward it, simply to see whether they'd maintain flock consistency as they fled. They don't, simply because the tendency toward the goal outweighs their group behaviour so much. I intend to fiddle with that a bit.
Kinda Boring Personal Notes: Anyhow, it turned out okay, I think. I used about 3 textures and am planning on experimenting with a helluva lot more. As I'm rather new to the 3D / Texture world, well... I guess we'll see how it goes. I have a lot of free time at the moment, being unemployed, so I want to play with some of the OpenGL stuff.
I rather rigged one of the boid rules (specifically, the tendency toward creating localised mini-flocks) for this, just to be able to see exactly what additive blending did. It was pretty fun to play with them a bit more.

rainer kohlberger 8 months agohello. use the MPEG4-container with the H.264 codec (MPEG-4 AVC). for your video, bitrates from 800-1400kbps should be fine. it seems that you're on windows, so SUPER (erightsoft.com/SUPER.html) might be interesting for you. -
Ryan Bateman 8 months agoThanks - I'll get on it next week when I have some upload space left again. :) -
Simon 8 months agoYou can find the H.264 codec in the ffdshow encoder in VirtualDub. I use that for almost all my net video, just some problems some times with the colors, but you can fix that by puting the quality to very high. -
Ryan Bateman 8 months agoAwesome - I'll look into it. -
Ryan Fairchild 8 months agoHey I just had a quick question about Perlin noise flocking. What resources do you use for this? I want to read more about it.
