If You think about doing this Yourself (because everybody deserve more space ;-)) i recommend visiting richardsnotes.org/archives/2006/12/26/macbook-pro-hard-disk-replacement/ for much detailed version of a how to get inside Your macbook pro :-)

Funny that I just did the same thing this morning. Only that I replaced it with a WD 250GB hard drive. ;-)
  • max milion 8 months ago
good for You :-) i've waited for WD 320gb drives to get them here in Poland like 3 months after they were in the USofA... but it was worth it !

Max....got a question regarding your upgrade...my 320GB drive is sitting here on my desk....waiting to be installed...I've looked at ifixit and they don't have exact instructions for the 2.33GHz MBP. did you find any difficult discrepancies to work around, or is it pretty straightforward??? I'm getting ready to do mine tonight.
  • max milion 8 months ago
good question - the only difference from the ifixit guide for 2.33ghz (which mine is too) mbp is that You won't find any bluetooth thing near Your drive :-) i was little confused but it simply isn't there - that's the only difference. And be careful when removing the adhesive between the drive and the cable (if you use too much force You could rip it off)

I'm not the silent freak but I do not think that it's any more noticeable than the factory model.

It is fun to see how unexperienced people do macbook "repairs" I am an Apple Certified Macintosh Technician and I do several repairs a day/week.

Not to show off, but I do this in 15 minutes ;)
The top case is just 1 ferm and gentfull plop and it comes off, no messing around with tools, just click it open.

Nice you succeeded, I added a 100GB to my MacBook, which is ofcourse much easy'er ;)

Now I am gonna buy the song ;)

Probably not wise to do this without an ESD strap on the the wrist. Sorry, but just casually touching, even not touching the MLB (Logic Board) or other parts is inviting a visit to your local Apple Repair Centre in the near future as problems do not always manifest themselves straight away. The above Repair Tech should have stated that in his last post. Read Below.

-This is such a big killer in the PC system and any electronic. You do not want this problem and take it seriously! When working with any part of the PC except the Monitor you should make sure your wearing a wrist strap. This cuts down on a ESD and promotes good health on your PC. When walking across the carpet in your house on a hot summer day you may let out a discharge on the doorknob or even electrocute the dog. I personally like to rub my feet back and forth real fast then touch the wife just for kicks. Of course this can be a bad thing if you touch a CPU and discharge electricity over it, now its history, how much did it cost?

-The most dreaded form of ESD is actually lightening and is just nature. Though seems harmless it can cause much damage even in a low scale environment such as you home. Your case of the computer itself actually has a chemical on the surface of copper fittings to direct ESD safely away. The system case again is very important to your system. When the case is opened up is when you problems begin. Here is some interesting facts about ESD that you should be aware of.

Most parts in a PC system use 3-5 volts of electricity
ESD of 30 volts can fry your components
You cant feel a charge unless its 2500 volts or higher
A ESD you can feel such as touching the doorknob is around 3,000 volts.
If you actually see the ESD which most times you can, this carries 20,000 volts.
-As you can tell you can fry your equipment without even knowing it! Wear a strap when possible and be careful in those dry environments such as Arizona. I must say that I lived in Arizona for about 3 years and discovered dry skin and no humidity. It was very common to zap everything I touched for months on end, especially with a little humidity to the air. Be careful during those months and wear the ground strap.

    Combat ESD

-There are other ways to get rid on the ESD problems.

Antistatic Carpet treatment. This can be bought in aerosol cans for the household. Not a bad idea really.
ESD bags, most of your electronic parts are stored in these bags and can really help out.
Ground Pads, this is good if you build PC's or work with electronics much. You can simply touch the pad to discharge ESD prior to handling.
Humidifiers, are a good route to go with in a dry environment. The air needs to be above 50% humidity when possible.

Great vid! It really proves a point. Having done this before I just had to replay the hard parts. "Oh no, he's lifting the keyboard too much" and so on ;)

To bbrother: Maybe us amateurs are to careful to just pull the top case. I got the impression that it was simply not meant to be opened again, but since I know that Apple stores offer to replace HDDs I'm sure that there is some ultra-cool move to do it all at once. Just can't afford to practice on the only MBP I have :)

Regarding the ESD straps mentioned above: I disagree that they are important. I never needed one at work or at home. Just make sure you touch something grounded like a heater or a tap if you don't have heaters. It also helps to avoid carpets and anything polyester and there shouldn't be a problem.

Sorry, forgot one thing: For those too lazy to reinstall everything: Just get a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner and an external 2.5 SATA case (USB or Firewire). With those two you can just copy everything over before you replace the HDD. The new disk boots right after you put it in.

Though i just have a macbook, i definitely love this vid.

Hope that Apple will make it easier to replace the HD in the new MBP. :)

Replacing the HDD in a MacBook Pro is nowhere near as hard as replacing the HDD in an iBook G4. That takes an hour or more and you need to remove the entire casing to do it. Replacing the one in the MacBook Pro is simple compared to that.

    Nerdbert,
OK. 6 Years as an Apple technician and have replaced probably 3 thousand. Yes over three thousand parts in all of Apple's Portable & Desk top lines. I've lost count on how many people who have opened up there unit and damaged a component without knowing it. Yes, if you discharge the static before the repair, for an easy repair, there shouldn't be a problem.........shouldn't be a problem doesn't really cut it when your opening a unit which costs a lot of dough.
Trust me ESD straps are important. Read the facts.

For someone who has replaced 3.000 hard disks, that was not a very informative comment. Use the ESD straps, dudes.

just had a little question. Is this the 320 gb WD 5400 rpm? And do you know if there are any dangers in installing a 7200rpm?
  • max milion 2 months ago
yes it's 5400rpm and putting a faster drive should not be any more problematic that this one ;-)

I can see from the reflections in the table that you have a very nice 3-armed 1950's-styled lamp hanging above the table. Can you please post a photo of this lamp, because I'm a big fan of such lamps, and it almost looks like you have exactly the same as one of mine, though it's a bit hard to tell from a reflection in shellack.

You are mad, doing that to your MacBook Pro. Why not get an external hard disk, with FireWire? What's wrong with FireWire? What do you need the instant hard disk for?

Yeah, Michael, there is a danger of developing a total data/performance speed fetish around your native drive.

well, you insert 320Gigs and get not even 298 Gigs back..
