Charlie asked me if I could do a "How to" video about the shoebox. So I tried. I'm not really good at this. Could be quite boring and maybe not really clear. So if you have questions, don't hesitate.
My last use of the shoebox : vimeo.com/661213

Help me to see the world through a shoebox.

Love the effect - will definitely have to build one!! like a ghetto view-camera, but without the hassle of sheet film. I used to build a lot of homemade camera parts for effects - pinhole with rollfilm backs, or homemade lens on SLR body, etc. Something like this would solve a lot of technical issues (shutter, focusing, light-tightness) by simply shooting the "ground glass" - brilliant! And beautiful. (referencing the videos shot with it...the how-to is good too ;)
  • Remyyy plus 2 years ago
Thanks ! Do you have a place where I could see all your experiments ?
  • urbansix 2 years ago
In my closet next to binders of negatives and still-unused darkroom equipment. :( I had some on webshots, including images of camera-building project, and pinhole photos, but I'm transferring everything over to Smugmug as we speak. I can let you know if and when.
  • Remyyy plus 2 years ago
Wow, it's a crazy (meaning impressive work). Thanks for the link !

  • boh3m3 plus 2 years ago
Man I really loved this. For a moment I thought it was a camera with some kind of lensbaby attached to it and then some filters in post, but this is so much more.... pure. It's a very wonderful idea. I need to give this a try sometime soon. Thank you for this!
  • Remyyy plus 2 years ago
Ahah, thanks !! And let me know if you're doing a video with the shoebox !!

I'm new to Vimeo and I just found your videos. I really like your style!! Keep on pushing harder!!

Check out my vids if you have some time. I do a lot of projections and live visuals using video feed back and other effects I get out my DV switcher. I use Avid to edit and I shoot with a Sony VX 2100 using Century lenses, I use the fisheye lens the most. I love distortion and pushing the limits of video. I can't wait to build a shoebox!! Thanks for sharing.

  • Remyyy, this is so wonderful, thank you so much. I love your Dog, it is a Cocker Spaniel, yes? I have just bought one here in the UK, it is a puppy and same colour, makes me laugh they are so intelligent.
    Olly
  • Remyyy plus 2 years ago
Ahah, it's a brittany dog ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epagneul_Breton ) I don't know if Cocker Spaniel refers to the same dog. If it's Cocker the name of the "race", then, it's a bit different, even if for some parts they have the same behavior for the one I have "met".

Really cool variation on pinhole photography. It is nice seeing someone taking the effects I'm used to from the analog world - optical and practical effects for film - and applying them to the digital world without using After Effects or any compositing software (as much as I love After Effects!).
  • Remyyy plus 1 year ago
Thanks ! I like After Effects too (for the small I know) but I prefer things I can touch, I think.

Ok - so I'm a bit late to the Shoebox party, but I'm totally making one now - has anyone tried to put a 35mm lens on the front?! I'm also thinking about making my box modular with a sliding paper (or Ground glass - might even ad vibration for less grain)... This has become such a project for me thanks for the inspiration!
  • Remyyy plus 1 year ago
Thanks too ! I think someone tried vimeo.com/653899 . Keep us update of your test.
  •

Awesome - some how I missed that one! (I'm going to start assembling my parts this week, and hope to have a video of my build and my test footage up by next weekend!

I was just looking for a solution to my good camera having broken down.. I have to film a project for my MA in London, and thought I will try something with lower resolution cameras. I saw your 'shoebox' a few months ago, by chance and will use the idea. I hope it will work with the project that I am thinking of. It could make it too 'romantic'.. I will post it when it's done. Thanks for sharing your instructions. xx
  • Remyyy plus 9 months ago
That's really cool !! Thanks for saying !! Hope you'll upload it somewhere to share. Good luck !
