The music, slow camera movement and subject make for this moody piece. I love snow and I love slow cinematic camera moves. This is a marriage of both.

Shot with a Canon XHA1 with a Letus Extreme 35mm adapter. Variety of Nikon lenses used. Movement was achieved using an IndiSlider.

Fascinating, the colours are beautiful, the movements breathtaking...
What kind of indislider do you use? It looks like a great thing to film with.
  • Steven Dempsey 5 months ago
Thank you. I use the 36" version (it's the bottom right version on this page: indifocus.com/products_indisliderpro.htm)

How do you like working with the 35mm adapter. I am looking to purchase a canon xl-h1 or a1 and was wondering which one you would recommend. Pro's Con's that kinda thing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Amazing footage

I really like the Letus Extreme, it's compact and easy to put on the camera. Working with such a shallow depth of field poses new challenges but, I have to say, I find it difficult to shoot with the native lens once I have gotten used to the adapter.

Beautiful Video. Pacing is spot on, and the music compliments it very much.

Awesome. My thinking was to get a xl-h1 and the Letus later when I had the more money, but if I got the a1 I could use the difference in the price to get the Letus now. And im wondering what your thoughts on that would be. I havent been able to see side by side comparisons or any real direct comparison to the specs of the two. Any thoughts?
  • Steven Dempsey 5 months ago
Kyle, there is no difference in the optical capability of both cameras, they have identical chips. The only thing you are really losing, per se, by choosing the XHA1 is the ability to change lenses. If you are going to be primarily working with a 35mm adapter, it's a moot point. The XHA1 is superior in some ways to the XLH1 because there is a wider range on each preset parameter to fine tune an in-camera look and also having the iris control on a ring rather than a little wheel is a huge plus for me, at least. I intercut XLH1 and XHA1 footage easily.

First shot of the ducks was powerful and amazing. I would suggest moving to the first third... Also, have you considered going forward with it and tilting up enough to not see the track? I'd love to see some of that footage!

Amazing video. what program did you use to edit? and what font did you use for the text?
  • Steven Dempsey 5 months ago
Thank you. I used Adobe Premiere to edit but there's nothing specific about Premiere that couldn't be done on any other NLE for this kind of simple edit.

Font was some kind of typewriter font, don't remember exactly.

Could you please add the info on whose music is it and who's playing. And what are the places you shot. Was just wandering... The ducks reminded me of our Lazienki Park in Warsaw. Thanks.
  • Steven Dempsey 5 months ago
The music is from an online music library called killertracks.com

This music is not free but there are plenty of web sites out there that are free. I'll have to look at the composer details. I don't have that info at hand.

All of this was shot in my front yard and back yard. I live by a lake.

this is one of my favorites by far.
as for the quality of the piece, i think it is simply outstanding. I personally could see this being VW advertisement, because the grade of production and cinematography is so high and well crafted, and it bares a very striking similarity to vw's advertising style in recent years.
its amazing what HD camera's can produce these days. such perfect depth of field and an ambience closely mirroring that of a panavision camera.
Im also tempted to by an indieslider as of now.ha

This is one of the most amazing videos i have seen produced from this camera.
The clarity is insane and the colors are very deep.
Loved the feel of the whole film. Very smooth.

Had a couple questions tho hopefully you can answer.
Did you do any post production color correction or was it all done in the camera prior to shooting?
if so, did you use any specific presets?

  • Steven Dempsey 5 months ago
The only post work I did on this piece was to adjust the levels to bring the blacks up a little. I did no actual color manipulation. The preset I used is on I developed called VIVIDRGB and is available at DVInfo.net in the XHA1 preset thread.
  • Nick Mitzenmacher 5 months ago
    thanks for the quick response.
Ill have to check this out, I'm going out to Jacksonhole, Wyoming and bringing my A1 with me.
Ill have to try out your preset because the colors are amazing.

Quick question on your indislider as well,
Do you need the bogen adapter for the indislider because i see there are like 3 or 4 different packages for the 36" one?

Every time I watch this I get the urge to voiceover something about how the elements and humans and radical change is needed to improve our world and future generations.

BASF, Dow, DuPont - pick any corporate logo to display at the end. Voila - paaaycheck :)

  • mandy friedman 5 months ago
i thought the shorts were kind of cute! it kind of, to me anyways, seemed like a "I'm done with winter thing". i could just be imagining this because here we've gotten an incredible amount of snow and i want it to leave, but i'm sticking to my thoughts :D

Hey Steven, the footage looks great. I've been trying to figure out what this indi-slider was all about. If you have a dolly is it necessary or is it just simpler? And do you find 36" too restrictive?
Also, I just finished a music video using my HVX with the Letus. You can check it out here if you'd like:
    vimeo.com/709165
  • Steven Dempsey 5 months ago
GP, it's just a hell of a lot easier to set up than dolly tracking. Plus, it's not always practical to lay track for short runs. Of course the limitation is you've got less than three feet to move so it's great for specific applications but certainly won't replace a dolly.

I watched your video, it looks really good. You managed to capture some really crisp pictures.

    HI Steve,
What codec do you use when experting?
it seems my videos get a bit pale in brightness exporting in after effects with quicktime and H.264. When i compare the rendered images and the after effects original they look too different.

That was awesome very very good job. I just got the XH-A1 a few days ago and, suffice to say, am still quite the n00b. Do you recommend using a 35mm adapter? I was looking at the Red Rock and the Letus but I'm so uncertain. I pretty much spent all of my cash on the camera itself but want to be able to stand up to the competition as far as quality goes for my productions.
