Another video for my Uni project. We have to make an interactive CD using Flash, and I decided to use my body as the menu, clicking on different parts to get different videos/audio. The previous video was obviously for the nose; and this one, as the title suggests, is for the arse.

It is the most serious video of the bunch, and showcases my laid back middle-class white-boy rapping style - which I'm still getting my head around. I have a couple of niggles with this vid, but I've not got time to do it again, so it will do.

Again, if you'd like to listen to the better quality audio please download the original.

Filmed by Tom Downs.

UPDATE: As requested you can now download the mp3 of this song from here: dakejuka.com/vimeo/Arse.mp3

Huge thanks to J.B. Nimble for hosting the file!

    That was AWESOME!
Thats more creative than most of the music videos of seen of late. And your "laid back middle-class white-boy rapping" aint too bad either...
  • Si 2 years ago
Thanks Joel! I'm probably gonna do more rap stuff, it's quite fun.
  • Jakob Lodwick 2 years ago
Whoa, that was SO COOL! The filming, the time stretch, the rapping... we should make a song together sometime!
  • Si 2 years ago
Sounds like a plan to me!

    that's cool man-
i like switching the time up there- faster and slower.
    was it hard to edit?
what did you edit it in?
  • Si 2 years ago
Not too hard actually, once I'd figured out which bits of the music to slow down and speed up I just had to work back from that. I edited it in Final Cut Pro.
  • djp 2 years ago
so did you use percentages for slowing / speeding and then do the opposite in final cut?
  • Si 2 years ago
    That's the pickle!

I'm in the middle of my final exams and feel exactly like this...

  • trp0 2 years ago
That was really cool, Si. The time changes on the video were terrific. Did you mouth the words slow in the slow-motion parts to get it to sync with the regular speed audio?

I'm anxiously waiting for the infomercial were you start selling your CD.
  • Si 2 years ago
Yeah man, spot on. Some bits are about a quarter of the original speed, some half, some a bit faster. I time stretched the music so I could mime along to it at the different speeds.
  • trp0 2 years ago
    That's just super cool.

    sweet edit

  • quizzical44 2 years ago
The thing that's great about this is the fact that you don't notice the edits. If you notice the edits, then the whole fast/slow/fast thing doesn't seem as incredible. But if you don't notice the edits, it's like you were able to change speeds right along with the song which would be inSANEly difficult.
  • Si 2 years ago
But it does change speed along with the song, watch closely! Each angle was a single continuous shot in which I mimed the song at varying speeds and then sped it up/slowed it down accordingly in the edit. I think maybe the fact that it cuts between 2 angles distracts from that. Unless I've misunderstood what you meant?
  • quizzical44 2 years ago
I guess I had a hard time believing you could do that - although I suppose to make it double time, it's easier because you're miming something half-time. How much rehearsal time did you need?

This reminds me of "Inertia Creeps (Alpha Mix)" by Massive Attack. In fact, I though the audio was tricky for the first 1 or 2 seconds of the video.
  • Si 2 years ago
I've not heard it, but I will check it out!
  • quizzical44 2 years ago
Massive is excellent. I was surprised that the song was yours - it really was well done.
  • quizzical44 2 years ago
Later that day I went to coffeehouse and they played a bunch of Massive Attack. Synchronicity.

The song split my brain open - it was really great, I like your rapping and the background instrumentals (slowed vocals) were a very nice touch.

The video, OK it was great - you obviously put a lot of work into it, and I want to preface my critiques here on Vimeo with compliments, I liked it - but there wasn't enough action going on to make the slow-motion very well defined. If you had shot this against a background of traffic on a congested highway, or even a simple spinning windmill or second clock - maybe that would sharpen it up. A , you just graduated, get out of school free.
  • Si 2 years ago
I totally agree Nick. We did film another version in a better situation with people and traffic going on, but it was ruined by a guy with crutches standing right by my head the whole time which was too distracting. I've not really got enough time to re-shoot it for the project deadline, but I suppose I might do at some point in the future to get it as good as it could be. It's pretty simple to film anyway. Thanks for the compliments!

  • Marisa Gesualdi 2 years ago
That was awesome. I really enjoyed it.

Almost reminded me of some old Jason Mraz/Bushwalla raps.
  • J.B. Nymble 2 years ago
I can definitely see the comparison there... i love trippy lyricism like that!
  • Si 2 years ago
I've not heard of either, but I'll definitely check 'em out. Thank you!
  • J.B. Nymble 2 years ago
Jason Mraz is popularly known for "The Remedy" and "Wordplay".
  • Marisa Gesualdi 2 years ago
But he's oh so much more than that pop shite!

And Bushwalla is an awesome hip hop/folk/acoutsic rap musician. He and Jason Mraz are good friends and they have a bunch of raps together.
  • Jimmie 2 years ago
No way, Jason Mraz is way more hip hop, poppy music. Completely different to Si's awesome raps. I started listening to Jason Mraz before he was well known, and he's totally pop.
  • Marisa Gesualdi 2 years ago
I'm talking his old old raps with Bushwalla like from the "Showtime At The Apocalypse" CD. Especially "Tri-Daddy Crew" is what I thought of when I heard this. Granted that CD isn't passed around much so you might not have heard it. I've been listening to Jason Mraz for a long time and I have just about everything of his dating back to 1999. He's primarily pop but there's a lot more to him.

I love it Si. I think that for all us Vimeo peeps its hard to reveal our "serious" side. I personally, am so used to making clips that are for show, and I once tried to make a serious clip and it just sucked. I think you've picked the perfect moment and the perfect way to show your serious side. Props!
  • Si 2 years ago
Thanks Tina! I must admit I was in two minds as to whether to put it up or not, but now I'm really glad I did! I just can't believe how well received it's been! It's now even more popular than My Reply! Must have struck a chord I suppose.

Sometimes it's fun to be serious - you don't have the stress and pressure of making people laugh. There's nothing worse than an unfunny comedian.

  • Si 2 years ago
Of course! I study Creative Music Technology, as do a lot of the other people from Bath who are on Vimeo. It is a music based course, but we do a bit of multi-media stuff too.
  • quizzical44 2 years ago

can we, your adoring fans, get an mp3 of that track?
  • Si 2 years ago
Yeah man, I'll gladly put one up. Can anyone recommend a good file upload place, or can anyone lend me a few megabytes? I really really am going to get a website made soon - over the summer, without doubt.
  • Marisa Gesualdi 2 years ago
megaupload.com has unlimited downloads and the link stays active until it hasn't been used for 30 days. I'd go with that.

I liked this so much I put the audio on my iPod. I can listen to it as I sit on a bench watching people go by and feel cool.
