Train Station - HD
Here is a video I took at the train station in Baie D'Urfe, Quebec, Canada. (Feb 2008). This was my first outing with this camera and my first time shooting in HD.
For the most part, the camera was set to record in HDV 24p. I used shutter priority (mostly 1/250 sec). I did not use any of the camera's internal effects. My tripod is a battle tested Davis & Sanford with a light duty fluid head. For filters, I use a 43mm to 49mm step up ring because I already have a good collection of 49mm filters from my film camera days. For this shoot, I used the polarizer, a Tiffen 812 warming filter and graduated neutral density filter. I did not use the "exposure lock trick" that I have read about, although it would have been useful in these bright conditions. For editing I prefer Sony Vegas 8.0. I find this program not only powerful, but very easy to use all while delivering a very polished looking final render.
My first impression of the Canon HV20 is that it takes very nice looking and sharp video. Forget about using 3rd party wide angle lenses and adapters. I have tried and they look like s%#t. Huge amounts of chromatic aberration. I plan to buy the Canon WD-H43 wide angle adapter (0.7x) it's pricey, but a "must have" item for indoor shooting.
The music I selected for this video is from one of my favorite groups, Boards of Canada. Please, if you like this group, support them buy buying an album from a reputable music retailer or visit their website at
