We keep on making the graffiti wall better and better. This is a little demo of the new stencils module we have added to it. We shot this video at Draw by Night, a Vancouver event organized my Myron Campbell. Visuals also by Myron.

That's gorgeous Alex. Love the artwork at 0:42. How do the spraycans work? Infrared beam from the can on the multitouch surface picked up from the camera behind?
  • I thought that the second I saw it. Especially when you're using digital technology or projections to emulate the effects of some physical interaction (like stenciling), just embedding the IR lights in the tools normally used helps a lot for providing accessibility. Cheap, easy, and mostly transparent.

    Yup that's how it works

Wow, This is awesome and very inspiring! I'm a 3d Artist/Videographer that is just starting to learn OF. My goal is to have enough skill with coding to understand how to go about something like this. I've been reading through the OF forum, but do you have any suggestions as far as where to focus efforts in OF to be able to head in the direction of doing something like your project?
  • Pat Long 27 days ago
Hey... I am the programmer behind the software of the Graffiti Wall. I would say where you should focus your efforts would depend mostly on which aspect of the project you are most interested in.

If you are interested in the "magic" of the multi-touch and touchless interfaces you see in so many larger installations... I would suggest looking into the field of Computer Vision. It's a pretty wide ranging field and encompasses a lot of concepts such as blob tracking (used in GW); frame differencing (detects people or objects in the camera's view); optical flow (detects motion in the camera's view); trained object recognition (face tracking, hand tracking, etc...), the list goes on... the computer can now SEE! think of the creative possibilities - even just warping or otherwise manipulating the raw video feed can be very cool.

If you are more interested in the graphics side of it... the best advice I can give is to start simple. Try playing with the OF primitives (draw a bunch of coloured circles randomly on the screen - then try moving one or all of them). Once you get the basics of drawing and animating shapes and graphics, try playing with some shaders to take advantage of the GPU's processing power for special effects. The world of graphics processing is huge... and most people just learn what they need as they go... Just start simple and add from there :)

Lastly and perhaps most importantly, don't be afraid to ask questions!!! The openFrameworks community is very welcoming to new members... and many of its members were artists before they were programmers, so people are very understanding and accommodating.

Hope that helps in some way... And welcome to the world of openFrameworks! have fun!

worrd...but ill stick with C++ for now....
  • Pat Long 23 days ago
Yup, it is coded in C++ ... using the openFrameworks library. OF aims to bring Processing.org style functionality to C++... allowing you to get better performance with a pre-compiled binary.

hey thanks Seth! The NUI Group's CCV (nCore) add-on was very useful, allowing us to embed the blob tracker right in the app!
