Carnaval Monkeys from Chamula, Chiapas, Mexico visit the neighboring town of Chenalho and perform the fire run there for the first time. The costumes on these ceremonial figures are based on French military uniforms, a memory of the French invasion of Mexico in the 1860's. They also wear conical howler monkey skin hats that echo the prankster monkeys of the Popol Vuh, and sandals of an ancient design. This is a quick clip but it was a fantastic day of music, dance, ritual, and drinking of Maya moonshine, called posh.

I have shot hundreds of hours of DV in the Maya region, but this is the first time I've used an HD camera there. Shot on EX1 at 60fps, ND1. More to come.
